Where should we send our kids to school?

Which DCPS (elementary) to choose? Willing to move. Would like a neighborhood school. Good reading program/focus. Has art and anything other "extras".

You will probably get a lot of replies with the usual suspects: Mann, Janney, Murch, Lafayette. I know some people think well of Shepherd and Key too.

Also Hyde, Stoddart in NW. In Capitol Hill, people like Peabody, Watkins, Brent, Maury among others.

Wouldn't recommend Hyde. Also, Stoddart has a lot of problems too.

What is the story on Eaton?

17:21 here -- My daughter went to Hyde and we thought it was great but it's been a few years since we were there. Don't know much about Stoddart except that I knew people who went there and liked it.

What about Ross? Tubman? West? Any opinions?

Eaton's test scores are not great. The school has been through a lot of turnover at the top recently, although it finally seems to have a permanent principal that parents like. Quite an urban feel despite the neighborhood--small, hard-surface playground. Not quite a "neighborhood school" in the sense that something like 50% of students are out of boundary.

Can you add on to this? What are the problems with Stoddert and Hyde?

I'd add Oyster and LAMB

I'll add a vote for Shepherd. They offer partial immersion dual language (English/Spanish or English/French), they have a great art teacher, and an amazing music teacher/program.

Yes, what are problems with Stoddert? I live in Glover Park and have heard only good things about the school.

Check out Stoddert's test scores. They plummeted in the past year. I normally wouldn't focus on test scores so heavily, but seeing as they dropped double digits, that's concerning.

Have a Kindergartener in Stoddert and absolutely adore it. Wonderful, warm, pretty well-run, diverse, tons of green space, active parent body, excellent before- and aftercare program.

But since my child is young, I'm not sure about test scores. The new (past 2 years) principal has been putting a big emphasis on standards and testing, so perhaps it was just a blip?
