Americans, does it bother you when immigrants complain about America?

Lately, he gets angry and defensive and calls me "anti-American" when I complain about various things. U.S. Foreign policy, the junk food, the lack of style of fellow Americans.

He says if I live here, I should be happy and not anti-patriotic.

Wondering if other Americans feel this way?

I do not. If anything I appreciate insights from folks that did not grow up here.

The food is a special complaint but also they complain about oversexualized culture and the men complain about women in the workforce. All of these except food should be verboten topics but I don't rock the boat. Occasionally I've asked why they're even living here and it's always "great money".
As an aside the higher ups were planning to bring in pizza to show their appreciation. I said that no one but me would eat it (last year they all refused it) and they really ought to order another type of food if they wanted people to enjoy it. We ended up with nothing.

Over sexualized culture? Where did they immigrate from? Salt Lake City? We are basically sexually repressed.

I’ve heard this too. This man explained to me how his sisters weren’t like American girls, they were conservative about sex. He said it like it was a common opinion. He was from Eritrea.

I still don't know we allow women out of the home unescorted. And don't get me started on driver's licenses. It just a slippery slope. Next they will want to hold political office.

One of my coworkers told me "A smart lady like you should be home raising children, not working. Your husband must not be thinking right."
Oh and to the idiot who made the Crack about Utah...these people are from tropical religious countries, all different ones. I know when you think you're well traveled because you've been all over Europe, it's fun to sh*t on America as being "repressed". But there's a huge part of the world that's not on your radar.

LOL. You've been drinking the kool-aid.

No. Sometimes it's annoying when they continually talk about how dumb Americans are bc it's like "hello then why are you talking to me?!"

I don't know who all of you are supposedly talking about because immigrants in my circle certainly don't talk about any particular culture in this way and certainly don't refer to all Americans as dumb. I think some of you are just making this up to trash immigrants.

The 'Are you against the COMMUNIST REGIME?!!!' response to shut down any criticisms, however well deserved, was very much part of the Soviet playbook.

So, it's been done before and done better. As in, more effectively. Yes, you can spew hatred on immigrants, but can you really threaten with 10 years in camps?

Many of the comments people make here are valid. However, there is an extreme American fragility held by a small number of people on this site. Just look at the thread about how British people cuss so colourfully. See the responses about them being obscene, elitist, emotionally repressed or white racists. A few people just can’t handle Americans being the best at everything.

Yes I do and I have no qualms about telling you that you are free to return to your home country. I have lived all over the world and my philosophy was very simple: I was a guest in that country and, as such, would behave as a guest and never complaint to a citizen if that country.

You might try to adopt my philosophy. The worst part is that you will become a citizen of a country you dislike and find our customs, food, and style offensive to your very delicate senses and a martyr to love because the man you married lives in a first world country! Millions of people would give anything to live here. We have a lot of problems.but having lived in Europe, Asia, and South America, I know the United States of America is the best place to live.

You disgust me.

Not OP but how about take down the stupid just a notch. Citizens of this country have the right to complain about anything and everything. Just like you do.

I'm am a citizen but here but naturalized citizens should keep their complaints to themselves because not one single person held a gun to OP's head forcing her to become a citizen of a country she finds so beneath her.

Nope. A citizen is a citizen and we have all the same rights as you. If I don’t like something I will use all avenues available to me to change it.

Well. Maybe OP should be attempting to adapt to the US instead of criticizing. She was in the country for years prior to becoming a citizen and she hated it but was more than willing to take advantage and use the country and it's citizens for her pursuit of happiness. Maybe her husband begged her to be become an
American citizen but none of the other 330,000,000 plus US citizens begged her to grace the country with her "oh so lofty" presence!
one else did.

It doesn't bother me but I do wonder why they came and stay here if they are so miserable?

Me too. I'm fine with recent immigrants complaining, I just wonder why they don't move somewhere else or back home. It's not like it's 1900 or something, we have the interwebs and plane travel.

It kind of bothers me when people paint Americans with a broad brush. Yes, some people eat junk and others are really healthy eaters. Some people dress poorly, some dress up. America is a melting pot. There is so much variety and diversity, the whole gamut. Complaining about certain things is skewed when the opposite is also true. Why complain about junk food when there are entire aisles of vegetables in grocery stores, farmer's markets, etc. Just because something exists like junk food doesn't mean all Americans like it. You're basically biased and stereotyping and fixating on what bothers you. You see what you want to see and ignore the other evidence to the contrary.

I find your imbalance in relationship the most concerning!

Feel free to complain away, I agree with you. I grew up here and wish the people dressed more nicely instead of like slobs (not the DC area but other parts of the country), drive thru food is bad for you and Americans do utilize them. Getting mad at you for just voicing your thoughts and opinions? Oh no! Let it rip woman!
