Had baby, pooped 4 days later, think rectum fell out.

Should I call the OB tomorrow?

So yeah. I had my baby a little early at 37.5 weeks. Extremely fast labor, I delivered 15 minutes after arriving at the hospital and much to my dismay, no epidural. I lost my mind, I was a maniac. I wanted to die. But I survived and now I have a new problem.

I started to get nervous yesterday. I hadn't eaten much in the week leading up to delivery. I was uncomfortable and it was hot. I pooped on the delivery table and that was the last time until yesterday (4 days PP). I was ravenous after the birth and happily gobbled up all of the unhealthy meals delivered to my room. When I finally went yesterday, it didn't hurt, even though I had a 2nd degree tare, but something felt weird. Kind of numb. When I stood up it felt like something big was in my butt cheeks. I whip out the hand mirror and am horrified by what I see. I've never had hemorrhoids so I briefly considered that's what I was looking at but it after looking on the internet I determined that my rectum prolapsed. I know. I started crying. I literally could feel it at all times. I am caring for my sweet jaundiced newborn and decide that because it is Saturday, there is just nothing I can do. Going to the ER is just not an option so it isn't even worth calling the on call doc. I was happy when after an hour or so I couldn't feel it anymore and it went back in it seems.

So I haven't gone today, and I've taken 2 stool softeners. Should I call the OB tomorrow and report this problem or wait to see if it happens again? Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes- CALL DOCTOR. I had it happen to me (much less severe though). Not fun... just horrible. Good luck.

But don't cry, please. It will be okay, you will be okay, I swear!

CALL YOUR DOCTOR. Reoccurring rectum problems are NOT something you want to be dealing with! The sooner you get in, the better!

Listen, listen, listen, calm down and dont freak out. This EXACT thing happened to me and I would bet 99.9999% sure it is what it is for you. It is called a prolapsed hemmorhoid. For me it went in on its own a little later unless I pushed it in by myself, it hurts to go back in but then feels much better and is fine. It eventually just went away all on it's own. But I totally agree it is scary as all HELL!!!! This is what a website said:

Prolapsed hemorrhoids may stretch down until they bulge outside your anus. A prolapsed hemorrhoid may go back inside your rectum on its own, or you can gently push it back inside.

Call your doctor just so you don't worry, but I seriously would bet my house that this is all it is. Don't be surprised if it happens the next few times you poop, just gently push it back in and I swear it will go away in a few days. This is one of those things that seems WAY scarier than it actually is. I was also absolutely hysterical when this happened to me too so I seriously feel your pain! Good luck!

Another one here with a prolapsed hemmorhoid...painful as hell, and I have to reinsert it after every BM. And, it's huge...like the size of a blueberry. Can't wait to have this sucker removed once my current pregnancy is over.

This happened to my kid and it wasn't a prolasped hemroid. It was literally a prolasped rectum (some of your insides got pushed out. Didn't hurt...just felt numb and like you have something hanging out of your butt (which you do).

It sucks back in on its own and it's not an emergency. You don't even have to go to the doctor unless it starts happening over and over. It's just that everything is stretched and weak right now and you were pushing too hard. It happens to children because their little muscles aren't coordinated yet and sometimes things get out of sinc. It's not uncommon post partum though. If it doesn't hurt then this is probably what's happened.

Just take a bunch of colace and let things happen gently. Now if it keeps happening you go to the doctor but if it was isolated don't worry about it.

Sweet baby Jesus, if you don't call your doctor when you think your ass is falling out, when DO you call your doctor? Call your doctor!!! Well, I guess it's Monday, so you have now (I hope??) I have never called doctors more in my life than I did in the first month or two postpartum -- there's just all kinds of crazy stuff going on in your body and the baby's body, and naturally, you have questions. Don't hesitate to call.

That said, it doesn't sound unlike the huge nasty hemorrhoid I had after my first child was born. It looked terrifying in the mirror, but turned out just fine. Hope that's the case for you.

I've had to do the "rectum tuck" at various times, and it is miserable. Call the doctor. What else are you to do- walk around wondering if you "should" call the doctor? When you have other things to worry about it sure is nice to have a professional tell you if you should or shouldn't be worrying. (this is a rule I live by, learned the hard and irritating way)

And (I cant' believe I am asking this) but please give us the status on your hind-quarters. Some of us out here actually think about the people we respond to and are concerned about the people who are on the other end of this anonymous message board!

I know this is not a funny subject, but I had to laugh at this. PP-you sound just like my aunt from Dothan, Alabama. I love you. On a serious note, OP-please do let us know you are okay.

Wait a second..... (NP Here) I have a giant prolapsed hemorrhoid from pregnancy/birth. So you're saying I can just push that f*cker back in?!?!?!?! Will I have to do that every time I poo? I'll at least do it before sex so DH doesn't have to stare at it!

Childbirth is such a beautiful thing!

I am fine, and I sure do appreciate the concern! It went back in on its own and looks and feels totally normal. If when I poop again it happens again, I'll call, but I am nursing my 6 day old around the clock right now because he is severely jaundiced and I'm worried he may be readmitted to the hospital tomorrow. So I literally don't have time to worry about my ass!

Thanks for the update!
Life sure is screwed up, and completely unglamorous, being a mom. Baby with jaundice first, but don't forget that you really do need to have a proper asshole. Make sure you talk to your OB at your next check.

Good luck with your baby! And please don't worry....it happened to my kid and his bung hole is perfect now. It did push out slightly again the next couple poos (which the doctor warned us might happen) but soon became a distant memory. We've had many an uneventful poo with no blown out o-ring. Just don't strain so hard no matter how bad you want to go!

I know people gut reaction is to call the doctor but this really isn't earth shattering no matter how horrifying it seems. Our expert advice was to keep an eye on things and if it becomes a chronic occurence go to the doctor. But once or twice is nothing to write home about.

I had really bad hemorrhoids postpartum. Ugh. The things we have to put up with. My husband stays home from work if he's constipated.
