Baltimore: St Paul's School for girls

Anonymous
Does anyone know why so many girls are leaving St Paul's after middle school? Did something happen?

What schools are they going to?

Well gee the wonderful students there...
Investigators found that a 16-year-old sophomore on the junior varsity team videotaped himself having sex with a 15-year-old girl – Such great amazing kids there. This is a few years old.

Then recently there was parent uprising over a survey of gender identification. Most likely this.

This happened before 9/11. Events from almost a quarter-century ago might not have a big impact on this year’s 8th grade

Not unusual for kids to move to more or less rigorous schools for high school. Happens at all the k-12 schools.

The sex scandal happened 20 years ago? Unless there's a more recent version of the same scandal!

The parent uprising was understandable and I'd have done the same. But I don't think girls are leaving the school because the parents fought back against the survey. The school responded very quickly and got rid of it, which is a victory for the parents. How many girls are leaving? Four?

Well the boys school just watered down its curriculum significantly by dropping the IB program, and the girls school wasn’t particularly strong to start with….

Agreed. From what I have heard there was a lot of bullying which prompted an exodus. I agree that the girls' school is inferior to other girls' schools and St. Paul's for boys.

St. Pauls is where you send your kids for HS when they're messing up in MS. It's also a place people send their kids just to say they go to private.

Couple of 8th graders leave BMS for St Paul’s typically. St Paul’s is definitely more conservative wrt gender/sexual identity. And yes academically there are many stronger options. They do have a ton of $$ though: the new additions look amazing.

Also suffers from inferiority to boys school, perceived and maybe real - don’t know. It is “down the hill,” boys have chapel in the chapel, girls have chapel in their gym, etc. I would not send a girl there for these reasons alone - don’t even have to get to academics.

SPSG is building a fancy new science wing.

It's worth noting that SPSG was the only girls' school to actually increase in size and enrollment while all the other girls schools saw big enrollment drops after 2008, even if there's been some rebounding.

The St Paul’s schools are among the weakest academically in the area but not everyone wants high pressure academics. The arts programs are strong and the school has a ton of money, which it invests in new facilities. It’s the right school for some kids and not others, just like all the rest.

What kind of child is a good fit for this school? I never got a strong impression about this when we were looking at schools.

Pleasant, nice girls.

People are being a bit unfair about SPSG. There's one "strong" girls' school in Baltimore and that is Bryn Mawr. Among the rest - RPCS, SPSG, Garrison Forest, NDP, is splitting hairs.
