While I haven't prioritized it as such, I have been to a lot of World Heritage Sites. Some of them are National Parks. I think it would be a good list to draw from.
I find it a good list to choose destinations from. Some of my most interesting I've been to: Antigua, Guatemala Tikal, Guatemala Mycenae, Greece Dubrovnik, Croatia Cartagena, Colombia Bath, UK Kew Gardens, UK Canterbury Cathedral, UK Leon Cathedral, Nicaragua Old Quebec Mesa Verde National Park Waterton Glacier Alhambra, Spain In the US, the ones I've liked best are: Glacier National Park Monticello Yellowstone Everglades National Park Ones I want to visit: Some of the French sites. Somehow I haven't seen any except from the outside. Macchu Pichu and most of the rest of the South American World Heritage Sites. Sintra, Portugal Medici Villas and Gardens Obviously, most of these are not off the beaten path, but they're worth seeing in most cases. Which do you recommend? |
Berlengas was breathtaking. We loved our visit there. |
That does look gorgeous. And I've never heard of it! |
Is Angkor Wat a World Heritage Site? If so, that’s my favorite. |
Sintra is cool, you can do it as a day trip from Lisbon or Cascais so its pretty easy to get to. |
Some of my faves (I had to follow the list online and then got tired of figuring out if I'd been exactly there)
Iguazu falls Los glaciares national Park in Patagonia Great Barrier Reef Shark Bay Wet Tropics of Queensland Salzburg Multiple ones in Belgium Belize Barrier Reef Old Quebec The national parks in Costa Rica Dubrovnik The big ones in France Palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin Museum island in Berlin A lot of the Japanese ones The 3 in NZ Machu Pichu and Lima The ones around Barcelona Stoneheng Bath All the ones in London Edinburgh Yellowstone Grand Canyon San Juan Statue of Liberty I would really like to see more in Asia and Africa, and stateside Hawaii and Glacier Bay. |
The UVA Rotunda. |

Great Wall of China
Rice terraces of Bali Edinburgh - new and old towns Blenheim Palace |
Mesa Verde with the cliff dwellings is amazing, out in the southwest US.

I looked up the official list and there are some weird entries eg the coal mining area of the Pas de Calais? Been there done that numerous times but it's not really a must see activity. Maybe it's there because of its industrial and war history. For the person above who claims to have been to the sub Antarctic islands in New Zealand - I doubt it. That's mainly for scientific researchers. I have been to the Taj Mahal first thing in the morning to watch the sun come up. That was spectacular and better in real life than in photos. |
The Medina of Essaouira (they filmed a very famous episode of GOT thrones here, where Daenerys meets the unsullied and takes her army). It really is beautiful IRL.
|
+1 for the Taj Mahal
Debated skipping it b/c it was out of the way of the rest of our itinerary, and I figured we knew what it looked like, but it was amazing to see. |
All the ones in Australia (we used to live there)
Galapagos |
Machu Picchu was great
As was valley of the pyramids outside of Mexico City Maybe my favorite was Petra in Jordan! (everyone knows the famous facade from Indiana jones but it’s sooo much more than that; spent an entire day in that area) I guess my favorites are ruins. |
