8th Grade Awards Ceremony??

Anonymous
We received a letter that our kid is getting an award but they are being pretty mysterious about the whole thing -- we don't know what award, there's no published program....we are trying to decide whether to skip another family event to attend this, so any additional information would be great. Thx

DC’s school didn’t do awards

It's not important. If it were an important award you'd know what it is, and still wouldn't be important to go on stage and lord it over everyone else at school.

Go if your kid really needs a win in life and this is their chance.

Did your kid complete their 75 hour SSL requirement this year? If so, that’s the award. I’d go to the family event.

At my kids MS (JW) they have or had an awards night where every 8th grade teacher gave an award to the student of their choice for any reason they wanted. Parents of kids getting awards are invited but not told what type of award their child was getting. It was a very nice event. Kids were recognized for all kinds of things some academic and some not. I thought it was a great event. Each teacher introduced their kid with a short description. My child who was struggled academically got an award and we were all thrilled for him.

Adding that this was a different event then the mass events for SSL hours and honor role. They are pretty skippable.

If your kid was invited but you weren't specifically reached out to, then your kid is either getting the SSL award if they did their 75 hours or a gold/silver academic award if they had a decent GPA. If your kid is getting one of the special teacher awards, you will hear from the school to make sure you're there. Even if your kid is getting the award where they walk on the stage with 150 other kids, it's still a nice event -- the kids tend to be very vocally supportive of all the individual award winners.

How would we know what award your child is getting?

For our son’s MS they did lots of awards in bulk (SSL, GPA, etc). Then they did a few special awards like male and female athlete of the grade. I imagine they reached out to the parents of kids who won those unique awards but they did not reach out to parents of kids who were getting one of the more generic awards in bulk.

There was a different tread on someone mad because FCPS didn't have a middle school parade

We went through middle school and I don’t remember any invites or email about awards. My DD got a certificate for SSL hour at the end of 6th grade but no ceremony ( which I am ok with).

Does anyone here from Pyle know of any awards or ceremonies from 6-8th grade? I have another child entering middle school in few years.

I think they intentionally do not tell the students which award to draw a larger crowd.

At my kids' MS, there were bigger awards (principal's award for one student), departmental awards (e.g, math, science, English, etc.), and smaller ones like SSL and honor roll. For the bigger awards, the students go up on stage to receive something and for the smaller ones, they just stood up in the audience.

They also had a video/slide show which the kids loved!

At JW that was a separate daytime event which parents were also invited to. The other event was in the evening. It has been a few years though.

Yes this is probably it. They won’t even call names individually if it’s a large group and then you just watch a ton of kids walk up to the stage.
They may have individual awards but not many and it seemed like those went to the kids who were favored by specific teachers.
