Vibe at UNC Chapel Hill

Anonymous
Kid is transferring as a sophomore to either UMD or UNC Chapel Hill. What is the vibe like at UNC Chapel Hill? Preppy? Very Southern? Conservative A bit concerned about fitting in because many kids are from North Carolina.

Seems better in liberal arts areas than UMD. Not sure it is worth the cost OOS though.

My female cousin from Severna Park, MD enjoyed UNC. Then went deeper into the South for grad studies. I don't think she found UNC too Southern.

If your child is lucky enough to be admitted to UNC he should accept immediately and not look back. It is a wonderful place and he will have a great college experience.

Chapel Hill the town and school are considered quite liberal. I went to UNC for graduate school. There are some aspects that feel more southern compared to UMD but I found it to be more in people’s politeness and mannerisms. Chapel Hill is a great college town and excellent educational institution. I think CH offers a strong sense of place that differs from the feel at College Park. Would not hesitate to send one of my kids to UNC if they were fortunate enough to be admitted!

Take UNC, no q. It is a great school and program and has enough out of state kids to dilute the southern part if that bothers you. Many from our nova area private pick it over Uva and love it.

Out of state students capped at 18%. So almost 80% of students from NC. That would concern me a little.

Meant to say over 80% from NC

Chapel Hill is pretty even keeled and left/liberal leaning. Greek life does not run the social scene but it’s there if you want to partake. It is not very conservative nor very preppy. It is very socio-economically diverse and IMO the students blend very well there.

I went there OOS and had zero issues making friends and having fun. I have pretty much had at least 1 extended relative as an undergrad since then (my cousin’s kid just graduated and another cousin’s daughter is transferring in this fall) and it still seems to have the same casual, laid back, accepting and fun vibe.

Have you visited? Chapel Hill and the school are very different than College Park and UMD (but that’s also a great choice). Sounds like a good problem to have.

And a big chunk of that 80% is (top students) from Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill. Hardly the deepest parts of the South.

UNC. Congrats to your DC. I loved my time there (OOS) and it absolutely kills me my kids likely won't get in.
