Which would you choose for your child? And why? I know they are vastly different schools but most kids in our neighborhood go to one of these two high schools. |
Are you Catholic? |
Yes we are Catholic |
Please move this to the private school forum. |
Sorry - didn't think it needed to be in the private school forum since it also dealt with West Potomac which is FCPS. |
Judging by the outcomes in our neighborhood, both seem to get into comparable colleges. At the very top, I think the Westpo kids do a bit better. Is the kid coming from a catholic school? If so, the Ireton or O'Connell (also popular with Ft Hunt kids). If not then Westpo. |
The head of school, Kathleen McNutt at BI is wonderful. I know O’Connell HS folks sometimes prefer for sports/drama in terms of the Catholic HS. West Po is likely an easier commute and has buses if transportation is a concern. |
Fair enough. I thought you might get more replies there. |
B.I. |
Where in the process are you? Middle school? Or younger? Is your child in the AAP Center? Or one of the Catholic elementary schools? Any kind of IEP?
Generally, the parochial schools are a good escape from “gen pop”, so FCPS AAP>parochial school>FCPS Gen Ed. If your child is in AAP, and will likely track in the AP classes/advanced diploma at FCPS, put them at West Po. If not, or if marginal on AP, send to BI. |
When there are questions like this there, you get tons of information on the private but little on the public. Just what I've seen. |
This is a good response. |
OP - 3rd grade daughter did not get chosen for AAP in her FCPS school. She has improved tremendously this year and we think we could probably apply again and she would get in but who knows. Not sure when they determine Level IV or not. |
OP - we are starting to think about middle/high school and whether or not we send to Catholic school now and wanted to get a take on the middle/high school in our area from people. If we move we would want to do it sooner than later. |
You can reapply annually. Your kid will have to catch up in math (they accelerate half a grade a year in 3rd and 4th) if accepted, unless already in advanced math. |
