Budget for OG private tutor

Anonymous
Please share how much it cost for OG tutor in person in dmv area. We want to run the budget to see if we can afford it sinve most likely it won't be covered by insurance. I think I can only afford at most a few thousands a year max since it maybe for long term.

$100 per hour is a good starting point. They will probably recommend 3 times a week.

our total bill was around $16k. It was $100 per 45 minute session and we did it twice a week for one year and once a week for another year. Also we did not some writing tutoring.

I’m in NYC suburbs and the rate here is around $200/hour.

Op here. I can't afford $10k or more like that. That is a lot more than I thought to be.

Im Im Bethesda, and we have used two tutors, one at $105 per hour/session and one at $70. We try to do 4 times per week, and in the summer try to do 3 - scheduling is harder.

I called sylvan and they do remote dyslexia tutoring. It’s $325/month for twice weekly sessions. We found someone local to go with who is only $50/hr (Midwest) and my son is only 5, so virtual would not be a good fit for him. But maybe it could be an option for yoy? Dc has motor, cognitive, attention, and speech delays and they said they were prepared to work with all that and find an OG trained tutor.

OP, depending on your own time constraints, look into the Phono-Graphix method and specifically the Reading Reflex book. It's very clear, simple phonemic awareness training with good evidence supporting its efficacy, and much of it you could do on your own. I've been working with my 7yo DS for the past two months and have seen good improvement.

FWIW, this content is very similar to the parts of OG (phonemic awareness, decoding, etc.) that are supported by research. The multisensory stuff isn't well-supported.

Phono-graphix can be a fine DIY program.

However, if your child has a diagnosed moderate-to-severe reading disability, OG-based methods are the only way to go. Tutors range from $80-$125/hr.

What's your evidence for this, PP? The peer-reviewed studies on OG show moderate effects, if any - even an article on their website says there's no evidence for the multisensory aspect of the program. Without that, Phono-Graphix is very similar and frankly, less cumbersome.

If someone has terrific evidence in support of OG as the Way and the Light, I'd love to see it. The peer-reviewed studies I've read don't support that view.

100-125/hour is standard. 4x/ week.

What is OG?

I wouldn’t try to DIY dyslexia remediation.

It’s about 100/hr (OG). My son goes twice a week. I wish it could be more, but that’s what we can do. He also goes over the summer.

Ideally, I’d like him to go 3-4x week.

Look at Developing Readers Academy. It’s a much more affordable online program with fun, cute videos and little exercises all set up in a progressive order. The two teachers who run it use the OG method and are very helpful and communicative—it’s an online program but they consult and give personal advice too at no extra charge. My kid doesn’t have a reading disability but we used it when we lived abroad to help teach her to read in English since she was only learning Spanish at school.

There’s an assessment to help you figure out where to start and then you just run through the online program. We did it twice a week and my kid really loved it. The teachers are super silly and fun, which makes the phonics lessons really stick.
