Honors/AP at Jackson Reed

Can anyone tell me how challenging these classes generally are? Curious both about workload and about how well they are taught. I know teacher quality will vary but trying to get an overall sense. Are these classes usually filled with students who want to learn and not cut corners or is it more a mix of interest given the size of the school and the lack of prerequisites for some of the classes?

Thanks!

The kids in AP classes want to be there. Intensity/difficulty varies by subject and teacher, although APUSH, for example, is a pretty heavy workload no matter what. In terms of teacher quality, for my kids’ AP teachers, I’d say 30% excellent, 40% good, 30% fair. My kids like the classes and are happy.

Agree with this on AP, although I would say 4/5 have been very good / excellent...and one is below average.

agree with other posters. Honors classes are just basic classes in my experience, called honors but i never saw the different with normal, basic classes. AP are normally better, also because the kids are all motivated to be there. my oldest kid (just graduated) was a no stem person so i have experience only with non stem AP, and in general I found the teachers good/excellent (my kid was in the WIS academy). second kid is an advanced stem but a freshman so no AP. she is taking honors pre-calc and the teacher is really good, but again pre-calc is not a mandatory class and is advanced so kids who are there are motivated.
