Heimlich while 12 weeks pregnant

Anonymous
I choked on a piece of food yesterday. Thankfully my DH was there to perform the Heimlich and dislodged the object. My ribs are really sore today. I’m 12 weeks pregnant, do I need to worry about the baby’s health?

Likely no. You do the Heimlich much higher than where the uterus. Even if he be went lower, the baby is pretty protected in there.

More than likely you're fine. But at 12 weeks, there is nothing to be done if you're not.

Your husband is the best! Im glad he was there. You can call your ob for a scan if you are worried.

You can't be serious! You must be the only woman who is carrying in your ribcage

Do you not know basic anatomy?

OP, is this your first pregnancy?

Welcome to the asinine responses of DCUM!

Glad you’re ok! Baby is very likely fine!

What is asinine about asking OP if she knows basic anatomy or that women don't carry fetus in their ribcage? It's mind boggling that a presumably well educated grown woman doesn't know the placement of her womb!

Where did OP indicate that she thinks you either carry a fetus in the ribcage or do the Heimlich in the ribcage? Of course neither is true, but the Heimlich, which is done on the diaphragm, below the ribcage and above the uterus, distributes pressure both up and down.

I agree that the baby is well protected, but I also agree that you are being asinine and wrong.

This. There have been so many nasty responses lately for this forum. It's across DCUM but it's almost every topic on this forum and I really think it's sad.
OP I'd just call if you feel worried. It was necessary and while it's likely fine your provider may feel differently if you are still having bruising or pain. It's a rare event to begin with and theres likely not a lot of pregnant woman who have received it considering people are on average only going to be maneuvered once In our lifetime or less the chances of it happening to a female who is pregnant are even less.
