FYI web privacy - you should search for your face on PimEyes & remove the results

Anonymous
I recently read about a website called PimEyes, which uses AI to reverse image search your face on the web and social media. Unlike Google Reverse Image Search or TinEye, they ask you to upload a couple photos and the AI system will run through its database of archived web content and find a match of your face in any other photo. I uploaded two recent photos.

The results? It pulled my face out of some deep archived internet data. The most prominent photo it found was from my 4Square profile (remember that site?). It seems to have been cached and republished in a few other places on the web. It also found 1-2 other random images of me - one on a random local news blog. The 4Square profile photo somehow had my first name and last initial embedded in the URL.

It was profoundly disturbing. I take diligent efforts to keep my Facebook and IG profiles private and unsearchable. I removed my LinkedIn profile photo about two years ago, given concerns about AI systems archiving the content and farming data.

But what struck me is how dangerous this could be for someone who is online dating or has a stalker. A person could screenshot a few photos from your dating profile of your face then find other photos of you out there on the internet. From there, it's a good chance that your name might be published next to your photo, thus enabling a random individual to find out lots of information about you. It seems like a stalker's dream.

With the four results turned up by PimEyes, they make it quite easy to request for the results to purged from their database. You need to create a free account (use a junk email account), but I wrote something along the lines of "These images were published without my consent - please remove immediately." Within 5 biz days, I received an email that the results were removed. I ran another search with my images and everything is gone.

There's lots of discussion on Reddit about PimEyes. I doubt they will be the last company to use AI in this manner, but if you care about privacy you should really get your results purged:

But then I'm giving Pimsite a bunch of recent photos of me to do whatever.

I’m at the point in my life that I’m too scared to google my own name. There’s no chance I’m googling my face.

And agree with pp, if I’m not in there uploading my face will give it to them.

Isn’t this exactly what that weird Uber PI company that went bust did with Ashley Madison leak? They said put your info in our search engine to see if your info comes up in the leak but they were actually collecting the information?

Oh, they wouldn't store them. Not after you matched them to existing images.
