My nearly 50yo brother is planning to marry in October. Got the text yesterday and he asked me about the dates. One of my kids will be a Junior then. I’m not keen on pulling my kids out of school generally, but this is my only sibling (DH is an only).
Anyone BTDT with a high school Junior? It is a stressful year from what I recall and my kid just started therapy for school related anxiety. Both kids are involved in sports and music too. I, of course, will be going no matter what. |
How many days? |
Hopefully it'll be over a weekend, and all you'll have to do is leave early on Friday?
I would not pull a junior out of school. |
So, where is the wedding? Can you go the weekend only or just add on Friday? You can travel earlier and have dh and dc meet up on weekend, or arrange a long sleepover so dc can skip wedding. I would pull my son for a day but not a week |
And by the way, both my kids missed tons of school and still went to great colleges (UVA and Emory).
Only a 'loon' would think this is outrageous. |
Where's the wedding and how much school are we talking? |
How much time are we talking about? If it’s just one day, I don’t see the big deal. |
Not unless the kid really wants to go

It’s fine to miss an uncle’s wedding |
How close is the child to the uncle? If its a day, I would pull them out but multiple days, it really depends on the child and classes, I'd lean toward no. |
If my kid was a good student and wouldn’t be harmed or stressed, I’d take them out if I had to. I’d try to figure out other alternatives and if not possible I’d have them miss as few days as possible. The thing that gives me pause for you is the therapy for school related anxiety. Having had a kid who started with anxiety that blew up into full blown school refusal and alternate non mainstream placement, your situation isn’t an easy call for me. |
+1 My DD is going to her top choice school and we pulled her out junior year for Disney. Not a big deal at all. |
Does your kid want to go? I'd follow their lead. Only my third kid is still in high school. I wouldn't have had any problem taking any of them out for their uncle's wedding (as long as it wasn't, like, his fourth marriage or they met last month, etc.). School is important but so are many other things in life. |
I pulled my Senior for a college graduation of family member/- however I was alters that you must claim sick or some such to have it excused. Just fyi |
Does she have anxiety about going to school that makes hard to even go? |
