Outdoor Furniture Cushions that are easy to clean

Anonymous
I bought an L shaped wicker lounge set from Wayfair and the seat and back cushions are constantly dirty. I'm going to need to get new cushions. What am I doing wrong to maintain these and what type should I buy if I replace them that is easier maintenance?

IMO, the best is to get outdoor cushions that drain and Sunbrella (or similar) fabric covers that can be zipped off and washed. Even colored Sunbrella can be bleached to get rid of mildew. If you get cushions that are designed to be outdoor, you can usually also just hose them off and let them dry in the sun.

I keep a bristle "bench brush" from the hardware store on my porch for brushing off pollen and dust in between cleanings. The only other alternative is to keep covers on them, but that tends to hold moisture and make them get mildewed, in my experience (but you may live in a less humid climate than I do).

+1 to Sunbrella, specifically Sunbrella so you know it can be bleached. But the reality of our climate is that if you don't want to be washing the covers all the time you can't leave them on. We are a hot, wet, pollen place.

I know it sounds risky and costly, but we just power wash our cushions in April of each year. They are Sunbrella, and we got them at the patio.com store in Tysons Corner many years ago. The salesperson told us about this trick. We use a 2,800 PSI Generac power washer and the medium of the three tips it came with.

We've had the set for around 8 years now, and every time we power wash the cushions they look amazing (almost like new). No rips, tears or visible damage of any kind. Not sure I'd try this with inexpensive brand cushions, but it works fine with nice Sunbrella covered ones.

We really like our crate and barrel outdoor furniture. It is sunbrella and has held up well.
