US gun violence vs UK knife crime

Just read a shocking stat from the UK:
247 people in England were killed by knife crimes last year. England is roughly the size of Virginia or Oregon. Seems like a lot. |

Ftr, I’m not suggesting we need guns. I think there should be a federal ban on certain weapons AND states should enforce tougher restrictions for purchases along with quasi-overreaching laws aimed at removing guns from those who are arrested or have even a hint of aggressive behavior or mental illness.
I’m just stunned by the numbers in England. It’s a lot. |

| Yes, and they have very strict laws related to sharp objects. My kid went to university in Scotland. Had to purchase scissors for her in the office supply store since they were not 21. |

England itself has something like 59 million people. That is far more than the populations of Oregon and Virginia combined. |

247 knife deaths is 247 more knife deaths than there should be. But I just read that on average there are 1019 gun deaths in Virginia per year, and 509 gun deaths in Oregon per year. That's a total of 1528 deaths and the population of those two states combined is 12.7 million. With England having more than 59 million people, it seems that there is a lot less chance of being stabbed there than being shot dead in Oregon and Virginia. |
