Where are my kitchen utensils disappearing to?

Anonymous
First it was a silicone serving spoon, which I chalked up to carelessly throwing away during dinner cleanup. Then another, which, again, I assumed I just accidentally threw away. But now it’s one of my knives. This time it’s different, because it’s a knife I keep in a drawer and it comes with a protective sheath, and when I take the knife out of the drawer to use, I deliberately leave the sheath in the basket in the drawer. I have a whole set of these and do this with each of them. The knife is gone AND the sheath is gone!

There is no way I would have thrown away the knife AND the sheath, either together or separately. Also, if I threw the knife away after using or dishwashing, where is the sheath?

What in the world? Help me solve this mystery. I am a single mother of kids too young to prepare their own food.

When this happens at our house, it’s because my husband will absentmindedly put something back in the wrong place, like in the freezer or pantry, or the wrong drawer.

Also how old are your kids? If they’re old enough to pick something up and walk away with it, it could have been them.

It's with the missing socks.

When I was married, missing kitchen items were 'always' the result of exdh misusing them in the garage somehow.

But OP said they're single. OP, did you check your kids' room? Maybe one wanted to cut something and couldn't find a scissor.

Do you have staff?

Cleaning lady. I loved mine but stuff like this started disappearing. I fired her. I do my own cleaning now. Nothing disappears.

How old are your kids? I'm convinced I lost silverware to the trash when my oldest first started cleaning up after himself. Pretty sure he threw out containers *and spoons* more than once.

If anyone in your house is "handy" or does projects, check their tool storage to see if your fancy knife was employed in a manner it was not intended for. Most common problem in my family is when small knives are used to open boxes, broken in the process, and tossed out to hide the evidence of misuse.

If you find them, see if my two wide bamboo utensils are with them. One is a spoon and the other is flat like a spatula. No reason for them to be gone, and I use them more than any other utensils.

When I was a kid we lived very close to a lake where my brothers fished from the shore for panfish. Spoons were always disappearing because they'd use them to dig for worms.

My son does this all of the time, I usually find them in the back yard, where he’s used them as digging tools or to build something— with the serrated bread knife it’s usually to saw something. But that’s best case scenario.

Worst case he just mindlessly picked a kitchen gadget up and dropped it somewhere else. These are the most difficult to find and maddening to me. Could be anywhere, the fridge the laundry room, under a sofa cushion. No rhyme and no reason.

Please. Give me a break. Why would they want your random knife? It’s way more likely someone in your own family misplaced it in another drawer.
