What are your thoughts on this? Some of my son’s friends got waitlisted at Catholic HS (all coming from a Parish school a mile away). But I met a couple of new parents that the school has recruited from areas in Virginia for sports. I get that private schools can do what they want but I kind of think it’s messed up not to accept decent (maybe not top but kids are in honors classes) local students and recruiting from far away. I’m sad the friends won’t get to go to school together. |
Okay. It’s Virginia, not Mars. Seems like the same “area.” |
Is it a diocesan HS? They are usually pretty good about taking kids from the diocesan K-8s first. The independent schools are a different story. |
Well, there’s a pretty big difference between a 45-60 minute commute and walking a few blocks to school. No, it’s not Mars. Lots of people do it but commuting kind of sucks |
That’s up to the recruited family to decide if it’s worth it. I see no reason why private (Catholic or otherwise) schools shouldn’t recruit for their sport teams if that’s a major focus for the school. |
For sports they recruit far. Met a family from the Eastern shore whose kid was offered a scholarship. It really stinks that these schools like Gonzaga and SJC have made it impossible for normal kids to be able to participate in most traditional sports. |
You got into a Catholic school just not the one that strokes your ego
Perhaps you’ll learn humility from this experience. |
Get a life lady. You’re “sad” because the crew has broken up and you don’t get to continue your little mommy clique. 🙄 |
Be better than your kid can play. No one is stealing your child’s spot. It’s survival of the fittest. |
*then |
It’s just part of the game. They all do it. Religion doesn’t get money in the door like it used to. Sports do. |
They are literally all the same. All. The. Same. They even offer the same programs with the same names. OP probably doesn’t want to drive for an hour one way to school. I know, how unconscionable. |
If these are not boarding schools, where does the high school house the recruited kids? |
Host families |
We have a kid at SJC who plays a sport that has "recruited" athletes. The reality is kids who are not from the area and are not living with family are few and far between. It is a handful of kids every year. |
