AMC 10 Tutoring

Anonymous
Hi, does anyone know a good online AMC 10 tutor for our current 8th grader? We are hoping he can qualify for the "A-I-M-E" next year. Apparently that's the name of the second round.

AoPS has both online and inperson classes that help prepare for the AMC10

If you’re looking for a tutor, I’ve heard about https://olympiadinsider.com/tutoring

Let me know how it goes if you give them a try; we are looking for an amc 8 tutor as well

Apparently these amc exams are more about strategy than actual math these days… so much for a math competition

Which mth courses has he completed so far, and from which provider? How has he done on the practice AMC 10? If he's self motivated, he would be better off going through the AoPS introductory series of books and/or Volume 1 than taking a course.

Not true, unless you are counting "get a copy of the test in advance" as a strategy, which was popular this year.

They are about knowing all of a very specific set of material, and drilling to increase speed, though, if you want to be one of the highest free scores.

"T2 Extra Curricular Series: PCX and UC1
Fall and Winter Contest Prep: CE3A/CE3B and CE4A/CE4B
Holiday Contest Prep Program: CW3/CW4"

Someone needs a marketing consultant...

That was a proven strategy with TJ admissions for year.s

Thanks to everyone who replied! I will look into the tutoring organizations as well as the aops books, but I am afraid my son will lose focus if he does self-guided learning

Get a high school junior or senior who qualified for AMO/JMO/MOP in your school or neighborhood. They’ll be cheap, relate better to your kid and be up on all the material. $40-50 an hour on Zoom.

Does your child want to do this? You are not describing a kid who is interested in the AMC 10 and scoring high enough to move to the second test.

RSM and AoPS have math competition classes online and in person if that works better for him. My kid enjoys the RSM math competition program and is trying the AoPS online class this summer.

I agree that a "tutor" is only useful if the student is putting in 5hrs of self work for each hour of tutoring. Or if you are getting 5hr/wk of tutoring, but that's expensive.

Classes are generally better than tutoring, since they cost less and you learn from the teacher helping other students too.

Has he taken the AMC 10 or AMC 8 before? If so, what scores did he earn? What math class level is he currently taking? Has he taken any classes in number theory or counting and probability? Does his school have a strong math team? Do you have a RSM or AoPS campus nearby?

If you answer these questions, people will be able to give better advice on how to approach the AMC 10.
