Looking for gifts for my kid, who loves woodworking, to make with his grandfather for his 3 year old cousin. Grandfather is a highly skilled craftsman, so it can be something complicated!
Note that the 3 year old is grandchild #8 in a family that is into hand me down, so there are a lot of things he already has. For example he already has a homemade play kitchen, homemade train table, homemade table and chairs for art projects, homemade doll furniture . . . . What would your kid like? One thing we thought was maybe a play farm with little animals, fences to arrange, etc . . . |
Some kind of balance bike or other ride on could be fun.
Or do they have room outside? A play structure themed around something the kid is into could be cool (my dad made a playhouse for me as a kid and a train car for my kid that got lots of use; could do pirate ship, or zoo keepers house, or construction crane. Three is such a great age for pretend play!) My dad also made a pretty cool treehouse/ wilderness cabin doll house and trucks/airplanes and animal pull toys. The later didn’t get a lot of “play” but were gorgeous and much appreciated decorations now that he’s passed. Oh, and pirate chests!! Maybe more appreciate a bit older, but if filled with ‘treasure’ a three year old might love it - and it’s a great keepsake as they get older (my teen boys still use theirs). |
Ooh yes a pirates chest. Any kid would appreciate that. I had a girly chest and I still adore it. My artist grandma painted it for me.
Also- step stools with their name cut out of the top, a homemade wood bunny Easter basket, wood racing cars |
Toy Box? |
OP here, This is a great list, except he has almost all of them. I love the pirate chest idea though. I will suggest it. |
Nothing helpful to add just wanted to say I was prepared to roll my eyes at this but it's very sweet. |
Why were you prepared to roll your eyes? Did you think it would be about something else? |
My husband’s grandpa made him a wooden tool box and he still has it. We hope to give it to our son when he’s older. That could be a cute idea with some wooden tools! |
Yes? Some granola mom who will only let her kid play with handmade artisanal wooden toys. I know countless parents like this. Your kid wants some bright plastic crap. Not OP though, this is cute. |
A marble raceway? |
My 2.5yo would adore an animal/farm/noah’s arc type toy — he’s very into putting things in order so sets of matching animals or ones that lined up neatly would be such a hit.
A toy/pirate box would also be great or something with the name of he gets a lot of handmedowns, maybe a name puzzle? |
OP here, He has the whole range. |
If you build something large enough for a kid to fit into please make sure they make air holes in case a child gets locked in it. |
I have a rocking horse that my grandfather made for me that my children are now into. It’s elaborate, but has stood the test of time. |
I totally thought this too |
