Baby is almost 6 weeks and the only thing we’re consistent with his differentiating day vs. night and doing bassinet for nighttime sleep.
Beyond that no real schedule. He eats when he wants but we try to feed him more frequently in the day in hopes he’ll do longer night stretches. We do plan on sleep training at 4 months but how do we work up to it? Is he still too little? |
Still too little. |
3/4 months
Congratulations |
I would not try to schedule a 6 week old, but you can get into a 'rhythm' . I kept my babies in the daily rhythm of our household-up when we got up (or shortly after) fed near when we ate (and whenever else needed) and naps near us, so they napped but we didn't silence or darken the household for it. That gets them into a pattern that fits in with the family life. I also did bassinett nighttime sleep and think it's a good idea.

He’s our first and so the schedule is mostly around him. We keep it bright and loud during the day for now and he sleeps pretty hard. |
I think this is a good way to make yourself crazy. |
That's good! But, he's 6 weeks old- you don't need to schedule your life around him. It's not a healthy or sustainable pattern to set up. Wake up, eat meals, get out of the house, clean, meet friends- with your newborn with you. Or, if you prefer (like I sometimes did), curl up and watch netflix all day while you breastfeed. Do what you want! Enjoy this amazing time! |
No not possible yet. Hang in there. I have a four week old and it’s definitely rough. My other daughter was like this at this age- no routine etc we successfully sleep trained at 4 months so I’m hopeful. |
How do you know he knows night from day? The only thing he knows is crying brings him something that feeds and cares for him. |
Weird comment. Have you never had a newborn? |
|
We don’t know. We’re trying to help him figure out the difference by making daytime bright with windows open and lights on and bedtime dark with sound machine. Every morning between 6-7am when he wakes up we open window and expose him to sunlight. |
Op what you're doing is fine. What worked for us happened to also be fine. Fine is what works. Our newborn was on a regular feeding and sleep schedule right from the start. It may have been the baby's temperament. Again ~ it's all good.

Honestly, aside from consistent bed times at night, I avoided scheduling my kids at all until they started daycare at 6 months (and daycare got them on their schedule very easily, which we then adopted at home).
Didn’t want to be tied to any particular nap or feeding schedule during my leave — enjoyed taking baby wherever and whenever I wanted. Enjoy this time! |
12 weeks at the earliest more like 4-5 months for my kids. |
