kitchen dining chairs

I’m crowdsourcing for opinions -

My house has a formal dining room which is adjacent to the kitchen and family room. Kitchen and family room are open plan, and the dining room is a separate room although from certain angles one can see from each room into the others. The dining room has a large rectangular formal wood table and upholstered dining chairs.

Kitchen has space for a table and chairs, and that space abuts the family room and is close to the dining room. I have a white oval table in the kitchen and want to get new chairs. I sort of want upholstered chairs in the kitchen (for comfort reasons), and it could tie into the family room color scheme and be useful for extra chairs in the dining room when occasionally (rarely) needed, but I’m worried upholstered chairs in the kitchen are too stuffy/formal, especially since that’s what I have in the separate but adjacent dining room.

If you feel upholstered chairs aren’t a good choice in the kitchen, I’d love to hear any suggestions. My personal style for all wood chairs is something like the DWR salt chair or Serena & Lily Tucker chair, but I’m concerjed those will both be uncomfortable.

Go for comfort. I wouldn't worry about looking stuffy. Think warm and soft.

Those all wood chairs are not comfortable.

We have these and love them.

Thanks - these look very similar to the upholstered chairs I selected. Do you have a separate dining room, and if so what style chairs in there?

Also appreciate the above PP's reminder to focus on comfort.

Get a padded leather chair - easy to clean, still comfortable.

I do think upholstered chairs look too heavy in a kitchen (unless the dining table and chairs are in an offset kitchen nook/dining area, but sounds like yours is open to the kitchen and family room). I’d do wood chairs, like a windsor chair. Kitchen dining chairs don’t need to be as comfortable as formal dining chairs, as kitchen meals are usually much shorter than a holiday meal or dinner party - and you could add seat cushions. Also, windsor or ladder back wood chairs will have a lighter airier look than an upholstered chair in the sightline from kitchen to family room.

What style table in the kitchen? Would a set of retro-style dinette chairs work?

We did a wood chair that came with a small leather pad for easy cleaning and comfort.

I would get a wood chair (DWR salt is great and they're on sale) and add this pad, they're insanely comfortable, and long-lasting.
