Horse trail ride near Grand Canyon and:

- of the 2 guides on the ride, one was a teenager who spent the entire time sitting in the saddle while watching TikTok and doing Snaps with her friends.

Really great example for my kids to see.

Why is a teen giving tour guides? Was this actually a teen or are you exaggerating, OP? (probably the latter).

If a tour company truly has teens giving horseback riding tours, this likely would've been mentioned in the reviews. Did you read the reviews before you booked?

Also -- how is this 'teen' getting cell service to access Tik Tok videos in the Grand Canyon? I've been there before several times and while there are areas you can get service, it's pretty weak - too weak to be snapchatting and watching videos.

Hi

I am the OP. Wow - did not expect your vitriolic response.

Anywho,

- there were 2 guides, with just my family (2 kiddos + my partner). The guide at the front was really nice; he chatted and provided info on the area. These rides necessitate someone at the back to make sure no one gets lost or falls too too far behind. My hunch is the other guide was family.

I could tell you the exact location (and you could find it), but I really don’t want to wreck someone’s livelihood over this.

But I am concerned where this generation is headed.

There must be a time and place for TikTok if it must exist here at all. But im fairly sure that place is NOT on a horseback ride through the woods near the GC.

it's a teen, relax. probably the kid's first job. would you have been so angry about it if the kid was reading a book or a newspaper? Or are you just mad because it was an OMG EVIL PHONE?

While I agree it's not the appropriate, time/place it's a stretch to whine about 'where this generation is headed'. Phones and the internet is here to stay, get with the times.

I get it, OP. I'm a HS teacher, and it just makes me so sad to see these teens just staring at their phones for hours and hours a day.

It's Boomer Center in this thread! But I'm sure you'd be totally okay with it if the kids had a newspaper.

You don't know what they're doing on the phone -- maybe they're reading news stories? Maybe they're reading a book on the Kindle app?

But hey, phones! They are EVIL!

Wanna make a bet? (Do you actually think the kid was reading the Washington Post or a book?)

I would be pissed because the guide was not doing her job, which was paying attention to guests. I would leave a review.
But I would not frame it as "example to my kids," that's weird.

I’d be irritated too.
I’m from Arizona and a lot of stables are family run so my guess is that you are right that the teen was related to the owner or other guide. They possibly were not psyched to be working that day. Possibly they had to fill in for someone that called out sick or their dad overbooked for the day. It sounds like they are not fully invested in this job….
I’ve had teen trail assistants before and they are usually decent — often it’s kids who have grown up around horses and it’s a job that they are psyched about because they love horses and all their friends have to work at the yogurt shop or busing tables at the golf course so this is much better, especially if they get tips. Sounds like that was not the case here though!
