Air quality at rec centers

The air quality at many of the Fairfax County rec centers is extremely poor. Is there anyone we can contact to try to address this? It seems like the pools should have decent air quality.

A lot of the indoor pools around here are getting older. Improving the air quality of an indoor pool generally requires expensive and extensive renovations that require the pool to be closed for months. Without doing big renovations, they’re just making small tweaks that only helped a little bit. Some people will be more sensitive to the air quality than others. if your child is or wants to be a year-round swimmer, and you live close to multiple pools, as you think it is worth trying to find out about the air quality at the pools. Some people who are sensitive will develop a cough that just gets worse with increased exposure. But I think there are many that are fine.

The air is terrible in there!

All air quality at pools around here is terrible, even GMU. Oak Marr is consistently terrible, even though swimmers like meets there because they think it swims fast. But everyone is always feeling awful after a meet.

Cub Run is one of the worst of the Fairfax County ones I've been in.

Yeah it is. Should be illegal to host a meet there.

My kid did a weekly developmental swim at Cub Run and I always felt nauseous or had a headache upon leaving.

You are right about the poor air quality. At the Montgomery county rec centers the chlorine can sometimes be so strong it burns your eyes and nostrils too. It is an issue. I’ve never got to complain about it, because I accepted it as a part of life.

Cub Run and Audrey Moore are really bad. But honestly, I don't even think the air is that great at the St. James. It's really hard to maintain consistently decent air quality in an indoor pool facility, esp. when you fill it with people. Colgan is pretty good, UMD is pretty good, GMU is improving steadily with the recent renovations. But yes, the Fairfax County rec centers are terrible.
