Repeating another year in DCPS

Anonymous
Hi all - my kid is currently in pre-K 3 at DCPS and has an IEP (for ASD), as well as summer birthday. I really want to explore the option of repeating a year before K (pre-K 4) or K, but not sure how it works. I heard it’s possible if a child meets certain criteria, whereas I also heard if you have an IEP, you can’t repeat a school year.

We like where my child is currently and would ideally repeat there, but any insights or tips would be greatly appreciated as we try to navigate this.

Thank you!

Discuss it with your IEP team in your first meeting at prek4. We did that and by the end of the year they agreed it was good for my child (also ASD) to repeat the year.

I know of a family doing this right now - and will be repeating PreK4 next year.

As I understand it, PreK4 is the easiest way to do this as you can just say that they are not K ready. That can be something like not fully potty trained.
I will see if I can find the actual guidance that they used and post back

We had my DS repeat K because he has a mid-September birthday. He was in a self-contained DCPS classroom and they gave us *such* a hard time, even though we had all our documentation in place. That was in part because of turnover at the school. It ended up being one of the fixes we got once we hired a lawyer, which I know is not encouraging.

Our kid repeated a year of preK at our DCPS, the whole IEP team agreed it was a good idea, and it was fine. Good luck!
