Place for 10 year old to work with animals

Anonymous
My 10 year old struggles with emotional regulation, ADHD and HFA. He is great with animals, but does not like horses. Any ideas on places he can volunteer and interact with animals?

Why not foster dogs or cats? You'd have to supervise/oversee but it's very rewarding.

If you can’t commit to fostering at home, at Lost Dog Rescue in Falls Church you can borrow a dog for an afternoon to take it on an adventure- basically get it out of the shelter for an afternoon, take on walks, bring it home, etc.

No place will let a kid volunteer at that age unless it’s kind of incidental, ie the parent is volunteering and the child is permitted to accompany. So if reframe it that way if you want to get anywhere.

Look at Hero Dog program in Maryland.

My 11 year old has a couple of dog walking gigs. She walks them a few times a week after school. $20/walk.

Places with animals that need volunteers do not have time to be providing support to your child with said animals. In other words, no -- your child can't volunteer at a shelter or rescue or whatever.

You can though. You can volunteer foster or your can do a dog's day out with Tail's Out! at Homeward Trails, and your child can enjoy that too. https://www.homewardtrails.org/help-out/tails-out-2/

You can also become a paid pet provider on your preferred schedule through an app called Rover. If dogs are too much work, you could start with a cat.

Connie Morelia Library in Bethesda has Read to Dogs about one afternoon a month. I wish my kid would do it; it sounds great!
