Fed hiring process

I was refered for a government position at the end of 2023 and was just recently invited for an interview. I thought the ship had sailed so I was quite surprised. What is the typical process like from 1st interview to offer? Can I assume that there will be 3-4 rounds of interviews and an offer might not be made until the fall if I make it through? How many candidates are usually interviewed in the 1st round? I know some of this depends on agency but I’d just like to have realistic expectations for the process.

It usually speeds up after the interview. You may only have the one interview, or at most 2. You could know if you got the job in a matter of weeks or a month or two.

keep. mind that most hiring was out on hold when we were in Continuing Resolution land. If they were able to pick up on the applications to their vacancies, they will probably try to get through the hiring process in a month or two. definitely do not want to risk running into the best fiscal year

Very agency dependent. I had 3 interviews. Some people get offers with no interviews. 1 or 2 is most likely.

It could go fast or it could be months, especially if you're the second choice and they don't let you know the decision until the first choice accepts their offer, negotiates, goes through the background check, and actually starts.

One or two rounds is typical. Every agency varies greatly, but I imagine the hiring managers will want to move quickly on this opening given the delay.

It took 3 months from the time of referral to be called for the interview, but then it was 2 weeks from the actual interview (single round) to the tentative offer.

Thank you to everyone who replied. Your responses are helpful as I mistakenly assumed it would be a long drawn out process.

If a position is a GS 11 or GS 12, can you negotiate to be hired at a higher step or do you always start at 11-1 or 12-1? And how long does it take to work your way up from an 11 to a 12 or a 12 to 13?
