Any kids you know from this year’s class turning down an Ivy / Ivies? Where are they matriculating instead? |
No - I think the media underreports the fact that the tip top schools have the most money to give. Our schools has plenty of middle class families and the ivies are generally a cheaper option than our state school. And def cheaper than the SLACS they got into.
I know one kid turning down Dartmouth for full ride at Duke, but that feels like splitting hairs. Not really about “turning down Ivy” but more “taking better deal at even higher ranked school” |
I have know people to turn down Ivy for full ride BK at UMD |
Brown and cornell turned down by 3 kids we know. They are going to:
Carnegie mellon (x2) for computer science Yale |
The reverse side of the coin is ivies have many students who turned down full ride BK at UMD or other state schools. Yes, this is not uncommon. |
^ C-M makes sense. Maybe they don't game the USNWR rankings, but people in the know *know* they are studs on CS, quantum computing, etc. |
Focusing on program excellence vs. school name is always smart. Because people in the know are the ones who'll be hiring you. |
I know two kids going to Northwestern who turned down Penn and Columbia. One studying chemistry and other engineering |
What's the CS attrition rate at CMU? If CS students can't graduate, CMU name is meaningless in sociology or anthropology. A Princeton sociology major can go to the White House. |
DC’s best friend turned down Dartmouth for UVA. |
NP - why can't a sociology major from CMU also go to White House? |
And for those of us doughnut hole families with no financial aid, sometimes kids turn down an expensive Ivy for a full ride at State U... |
It does (although they are always top 3 when you look at USNWR rankings by different majors), but my kid knows several unhappy people at CMU. A horrible grind with tons of work and joyless. This seems to be a common theme with CS programs that are more theoretical and more math-based. You also have many kids rejected at MIT, where CMU is their 2nd choice...so there is that element. |
I guess. We don’t have a lot of full rides at our state u and I’ve found donut hole families (making 250k) just say, what the hell, and pay the 350 for take over the 200k for state u. The delta isn’t enough to stop them. |
Kid we know is turning down Princeton, Yale, Cornell for Brown. Life balance… |
