Talk to me about Alexandria City

Why would anyone want to live there? The schools suck. They’re increasing property taxes by a huge amount this year. What am I missing? What’s the draw? Old “charming” townhouses?

I grew up in the City in a neighborhood of single houses off Janney's Lane. My sibs and I went to Saint Mary's and then Bishop Ireton. We graduated from top tier colleges and graduate programs or law schools. We all live in the City and our children are attending or will attend the same schools we attended. It is home to us and we find it convenient to our work, DC, and we have ties to the community.

Sounds like you are more suited to Arlington which provides more affordable housing for your sort.

Go to Ashburn.

I rented there then had a small duplex. 15 years I guess. It was completely unremarkable outside of Old Town, the people were boring and unfriendly, and not once did I think I care that I’m here. The city government was beyond my influence in any way as if I could do anything about the schools. I left with not a second thought. Parts of Old Town are beautiful and unique though. I love the history in that sense.

Most of the people that I know in Old Town are single older adults or empty nesters. It is very charming and has cute restaurants and retail and a waterfront. I think for that demographic, it's one of the best places to live in the DMV if you want walkability.

Ironic coming from the person sending their kids to Ireton not SSSAS

I would love to live in old town. I love the water and would love to have a boat there and be able to walk to dinner and drinks all the time. However, I have kids, and that’s not the time of life we are in right now.

You forgot flooding and crime. And incompetent governance. But the waterfront is charming…to visit.

Alexandria would solve most of its crime, high tax and terrible school issues if they pulled a St. George from the West End.

I live in Alexandria and would not live anywhere else in the DMV. It's an ideal place for DINKs.

It's pretty clear you have made up your mind. People who live here like it, and there are plenty of people eager to move in as well-priced houses are still flying off the market. It's not for everyone. That's okay.
