8th grade Algebra 1 SOL

Is it required to pass this SOL for graduating HS? How difficult is this SOL? Kid does great in unit tests (overall grade 97%) but not so good (ie barely passes) in semester end/year end exams.

My kid didn’t even take the Algebra I SOL in 8th grade; I opted her out due to COVID. It was fine. She took the Geometry SOL freshman year and got the required verified credit.

FWIW, they’ll push the SOL in 9th grade regardless because of Federal participation requirements. If your child had the verified credit from 8th grade you could skip it, but if you have concerns about Algebra I and they’re going to schedule your kid to take the Geometry SOL in 9th anyway, you could just do that.

I forgot to add, if the issue is all standardized testing, you’re going to need to work on that because your child needs 5 verified credits to graduate. They don’t have to be SOLs as their are alternatives but there does have to be some kind of testing in math, reading, writing and science (many schools have moved to classroom based assessment in social studies).
