Kids has asthma and experiencing pain

Anonymous
9 yo has asthma and been experiencing chest pain ( entire class time so about 45 min) twice recently. We stopped steroid inhaler probably March ( realized there’s steroid in it, DC started to have some red bump/patch like thing here and there we didn’t know what caused it; DC continue to have long term on and off cold symptoms ( sometimes 2 rounds 20 day antibiotics to ease the bad cold symptoms ). we felt why the steroid inhaler if it couldn’t control well), and used only albuterol and fluticasone ( just realized it has steroid as well). DC’s scheduled for sleep test in August. Tried to schedule pediatric pulmonologist but was told availability would be September. DH wondered if it’s related to heart. Should we see pediatrician and get referral for xray or other diagnosis?

If the breathing is bad go to urgent care and ped. Call the pulmonologist.

Did you stop the medication under the supervision of a doctor? It seems very weird to me to say "my kid has this disease, which can be fatal in kids, and they weren't getting good enough control from the medication they were on, so we just stopped it and left them untreated".

Stop playing Google doctor. Go see a pediatrician. Your putting your child's life in danger.

Your kid has poorly controlled asthma because you're trying to play doctor.

This, OP. Get her in to her doctor.

Like all the other posters, I am reading this thinking “what in the fresh hell?” Your child has asthma. You are withdrawing life saving treatment from them by taking them off pulmicort or Advair. Or whatever the hell your doctor (you know the one that went to med school, did residency, and has seen thousands of patients) prescribed. Don’t you think it is a weird coincidence that you take them off medication and all of sudden they are having chest pains? But sure, it’s probably heart disease. Like a genetic defect you never found or angina. Because heart disease is very common in kids. It couldn’t possibly be their lungs tightening up because it’s allergy season and you have taken them off their inhaler. You do know that steroids are what keep the inflammation down? Albuterol is a RESCUE inhaler. It doesn’t get rid of ongoing inflammation. And Flonase doesn’t help with asthma. Let’s hope you don’t end up in jail, like this parent that just decided to stop their kid’s asthma medication. Spoiler alert - she died.

Asthma causes pain and tightness in the chest. This is likely what your child experienced. They need to be on a steroid inhaler. What makes you think it wasn't working? If your child was still having symptoms of asthma while taking the steroid inhaler then a higher dose is likely needed. Our DD (age 7) takes 2 puffs of Flovent 110mcg twice a day (morning and evening). We had her on a lower dose when she was younger but she was having breakthrough symptoms (cough, wheeze, chest tightness/pain) so her doctor increased the dose. Also, the bumpy red patches sound like eczema, which often co-occurs with asthma. If you haven't seen an asthma and allergy clinic yet, make an appointment. We go to Schreiber Allergy in Rockville and it is excellent.
