Stroller safety

Had a super scary incident with my toddler a while ago and thought I'd share on here for general awareness.. if it helps one other parent avoid a similar situation my work is done!
I was on a trail in a public garden with my toddler in a stroller, stopped to look at a sign that had a QR code on it. Took out my phone to scan the code and next thing i know I hear my child let out a small cry - I had forgotten to put the brake on the stroller and the path was inclined (this wasnt immediately obvious for various reasons, i've gone back to see) and the stroller rolled away. There was a stream right ahead where the stroller was headed (could not see it from where i was because of a turn) and in what seemed like a flas h the stroller tumbled down, off the path. It could have landed in the stream, which was full of big rocks. Except thankfully there was a ledge of sorts that it landed on, upside down. And because I had my child strapped in and there was a sturdy bar in front of them as a part of the stroller that took the impact, they were miraculously ok except for a small scratch.

I shudder to think of it even now and am so thankful for the stroller having had the bar and the ledge and everything else that saved my child. I have beaten myself to death in my mind for my negligence and hope that by sharing here I will prevent someone else from being in such a situation. And of course I never fail to put the brake on the stroller now when I take my hands off it for even a moment.

My Babyzen yo-yo’s break failed in a parking lot. Stroller literally rolled into a car with a fortunately very alert driver. The lesson I learned was not to trust the brakes and always have either hands or eyes directly on the stroller.

I had a similar experience once at a street corner — fortunately this was in March 2020 and the street was deserted and I caught the stroller before it actually reached the curb but I nearly had a heart attack when I saw it starting to roll. Never stopped without checking the brake twice after that.
