Approximately many players do not receive an invitation to play 10u soccer for VYS?

Based on the large number of players at the first try out, I’m trying to determine if my 10u son has a chance to make any of the teams. He did not receive an invitation after the first try out. He’s planning on attending the second try out and really wants to play more than rec. Is there any other programs we can look at in the area if he doesn’t get an invite to VYS?

Are you new to the club? or a returning player?

People need to realize many of the spots have already been filled by returning players. Typically, the top team will have 1-2 spots open.

If you are new to travel soccer and or are currently in rec soccer, you need to go to all 3 tryouts. An offer for new the new players usually doesn't happen until after the 3rd tryout if they are coming from rec.

There are only 2 tryouts for vys. I wouldn’t expect a new player to get a spot after the first. Go back to the next one, it will be smaller and you'll have a sense of how many more players are vying for spots.

Its a good idea to try out for multiple leagues, but many are already underway by now.

It's not unusual to not receive an offer after the first tryout; attend all of them and then see what happens.

That said, it's not a bad idea to tryout with a couple of conveniently located clubs for you.

VYS is a good club, however, and usually has several teams at each age group so there is a good chance your kid will be right for one of them.

How is VYS going to hire all these additional coaches if they keep adding new teams this year?

I don't know if anyone meant that VYS was "adding new teams" this year. In my experience, they always have 3 or so teams for each age group: Red / Black / White / sometimes even more.

I heard 2014 boys has 5 teams right now in U10. Maybe that goes down to 4 next year? Either way seems like some kids will not get offered any kind of spot. I wonder whether they have already filled their top two teams or if they are still leaving a few spots open for new players. There were so many boys at the first tryout. I hope they separate existing from new (or received an offer vs. not received an offer) at the second tryout.

If your kid comes everyday and puts in the effort with a good attitude then VYS will find opportunities for your kid to move up. If you or your kid approaches your situation with entitlement it will only undermine your opportunities. If the club needs you to play down, don't look at it as being below you, but consider it as an opportunity to play and get better. Coaches are your best advocate at your current club and future clubs (because coaches move all the time). VYS appreciates the coachability of players. Too many parents undermine their own kid's opportunities at clubs by engendering entitlement. Those long car rides home from practices/games/tournaments are where parents end up undermining their kid's prospects by not allowing mistakes and failures to be learning opportunities. rant/

VYS does have a lot of entitled kids.

Or did you mean youth travel sports in general?

They are adding the teams at the older levels because of a very large amount of kids that showed up to the tryouts.

2014 does indeed have 5 teams of approx 12 players each. They will be moving to 9v9 in the fall, and the standard move would be to switch to 4 teams of 14 players each (56 spots). VYS trains as an academy (all teams players from an age group on the field at the same time), so the main limitation is field space.

In big birth years like this I really wish they would keep more teams, as the funnel will continue to narrow over time, and having a large player base will make their top teams better at older ages.

Last year, approximately 20 new players were added to the team. I don’t expect as many this year, but there will be some. Do not worry about what team you get if you get an offer. Take the spot, perform, and you’ll be moved up.

If you don’t get a spot, be gracious about it, stay in touch with the club, and ask to practice with the team a few times in the fall. The club will usually lose a player or two over the summer unexpectedly.

The best time to join any team is not tryouts. It is fall or early spring. You start by practicing with the team, then work your way on from there. Most clubs actually leave a spot or two open for these kinds of players.

The key is to continue improving in the meantime. Play futsal over the summer, enroll in camps, practice at an empty field on weekends, potentially look at private training, etc.

Are players from outside usually added to lower teams then moved up if they perform, or will they add a player to a higher team right away if it seems like they would add strength to the existing team? Also curious how the 2014 boys top team at VYS stacks up against other clubs like McLean, BRYC, SYC, Arlington, etc. Better or worse than those clubs' first and second teams?

It depends on the player and how they join the team.

Game changer, coming from another club, and practiced with the team in advance of tryouts? Can easily go straight to the top team.

Strong player, but coming from house and their only exposure is two 90-minute tryouts with 110 other kids? Probably going to get a 3rd or 4th team offer and need to work their way up.

But VYS will promote you, I feel like the club is pretty fair about that (and will move players down, which isn’t popular, but is necessary).
