Reminder for upcoming college grads: use a professional email address!

Anonymous
Parents, be sure to remind the grads in your life that the email address they use when applying for jobs should be some form of First.Last@email or FirstLast@email or LastFirst@email, etc. Try to avoid using numbers but if they have to use numbers, don't use 69 or 420.

I have seen far too many unprofessional emails come through recently. Luckily, I'm a Millennial so the goofy emails aren't too off-putting to me. However, they are for a few of my older coworkers. Not all companies will have someone to go to bat for why chief_skadoo69@gmail is actually a perfect candidate for the position.

I think most people have to have numbers in their email at this point. But other than that, really good advice.

Yes agree. Gen x here I’m chill about things but I’d roll my eyes at that email address.

While we’re at it, DCUM hovering parents should also check the photo your DC has loaded onto LinkedIn. Professional Headshot, School grad photo are good. This is not Insta. An image of your DC’s backless dress with her head profile turned to the side is not a professional image! (At least not at the companies I work for

The number of people who have their full birthdates in their email address is truly alarming

Why wouldn’t the kid use their college email? Do they stop working upon graduation?

What is wrong with 420?

Not sure if you're joking, but it's a reference to smoking pot.

PP again, obviously that won't bother some people.

Probably not or some will transfer to an alumni email. Again this is off putting for some. They can appear young or pretentious. The only people I know who use these after college went to Harvard or MIT and want everyone to know forever. Just get a gmail account.

The thread is about current college students. I get once you are graduated.

I think it would bother a lot of pot users, like me.

You want to consume pot on your own time? Fine. But to apply for a job with 420 in your contact info is just dumb. It shows a total lack of judgement.

You can only call them out if they are using those emails as a professional contact on a resume when looking for jobs.
