Do you have a Son at Walter Johnson?

About 5'5, slim, long hair and went to school today with a white t-shirt and grey cotton shorts? If so, I just witnessed him and other WJ students robbing the CVS for candy and other food at the Wildwood Shopping Center. Nice to see parents and MCPS are teaching kids about morals and honesty these days.

Maybe you should contact WJ instead of this broad audience.

for so many reasons. The school isn’t going to do anything. This happened off school property, so what does the school have to do with it? This is a parent issue, not a school issue.

There has always been a contingent of adolescents who steal from stores, and do other dangerous and stupid things, like drink and drive, at every generation. DD was horrified to learn that some of her Westland middle school classmates did this at Montgomery Mall. Back in my day, teens did the same thing - not even in the same country. It's not because they can't afford necessities. It's because some teen brains relish the thrill. For the most part, they grow into responsible adults. Those that don't drink and kill themselves at the wheel.

But good of you to crawl out from under your rock and join the rest of us.

Me again.

This isn't to say that you can't contact the acting Principal of Walter Johnson, OP (the Principal retired mid year). You are a member of the community, therefore you are entitled to complain about the behavior of a presumed student of that school. Principals sometimes send out emails to families about behavioral problems that occur in or near their schools. The ones that happen off campus but impact the community can still be part of a warning about losing business support if students act out. A couple of years ago, the Principal of WJ sent out a message about students fighting in front of businesses near the school (knives and chairs were involved). She said that she would curtail open lunch for certain grades if this continued. One theft in one store will probably not trigger an email, but if enough people complain... who knows.

Just don't expect much.

The state and local government that you voted to elect has absolutely 0 interest in prosecuting petty theft. Our government officials (that you elected) have made it clear to our youth that stealing less than a certain dollar threshold is legal.

If you are concerned about student behavior off campus you might want to lobby for MCPS to provide adequate facilities. WJHS currently has 2942 students, with an official capacity of 2290. There is no way that the cafeteria can house all the students at lunch. So students are off campus, and some are doing things they shouldn't.

At some point, Woodward High School will open, presumably drawing some students from WJHS. However, the school board currently has no plans to build an auditorium for that high school. Will they be having assemblies and performances outside? On zoom? Who knows.

OP do you really think this is something new and unique to Montgomery County school system? I lived in a completely different state and when I was in high school, I stupidly used to steal make up. I could afford the make up, but for some reason, I liked the thrill of shoplifting. Fortunately, I grew out of it, and it was just a short phase I was in and I'm not proud of it however, I know I wasn't the only girl who did that. Anyway, while it's bad, it's not surprising

How do you know they go to WJ?

And why do you describe just the one guy and not the others?

Did you tell the store manager?

Other schools have close campuses and one lunch. They eat in the halls, classrooms, etc.

The off campus policy has changed. Students can buy their lunch at the local stores and restaurants but they can’t sit and eat it off campus. They eat in the hallways or any available empty space they can find in the school. Definitely not ideal.

Of course you know why OP did this, it's to put those "W" type kids who [also] steal and do bad stuff on blast on this forum.

Full disclosure. I had a son at WJ. He did clubs and math honors tutoring at lunchtime, and stayed in or on school grounds for lunch, as I did not want him to be an accidental accomplice to something like this. Anywhere there are 3,000 students, odds are that someone is doing something that is not ok. There are new lunchtime entry policies at Giant is my understanding. It may be that Wildwood becomes a no-go, we shall see.
