Einstein VAPA should be a countywide magnet program.

I think the county should keeping an open mind about expanding the Einstein VAPA program countywide, especially with the news of Woodward not having a PA magnet. I think it’s worth considering expanding Einstein VAPA when Woodward is finished. Implementing auditions like the VAC could greatly benefit both the schools graduation rates and the community. Correct me if I’m wrong but Einstein can't receive a building extension, upgrading some classrooms for better performing arts facilities seems like a good idea.

My thought is they should have more true arts magnets but if you want Einstein, either lottery in or move to the area.

Einstein needs to be torndown and redone. It's a dump. The auditorium is tiny and they have to have multiple concerts for each group because they cannot fit everyone in. They could go up with Einstein.

Einstein is a good school. Worrying about graduation rates isn't the issue. They need to get rid of the IB program and bring more AP's and higher level classes.

That would leave Kennedy as the only IB program in the DCC and I will tell you, Kennedy's IB program is on shaky ground.

Is Einstein's IB program not run well? Or are you just saying get rid of it because you believe the program's existence is suppressing more AP course availability?

This isn’t a bad idea. Einstein already has the reputation for being an arts school, time to make it official. However, they need to do some reconstruction on some areas of the school.

Interesting idea, OP. Unfortunately, I do think that a true performing arts magnet would require almost a gut remodel of any space, if we're not getting a new build.

At a minimum, a performing arts magnet would need a well-appointed auditorium with room for a pit orchestra and black box theater, about double the dance/rehearsal rooms that MCPS high schools normally have, and at least 20 small soundproofed practice rooms that kids could reserve for vocal and instrumental music practice.

I would love for MCPS to have this opportunity for kids, but I'm just not sure how it would work now that they give up on building WHS as an arts magnet.

The focus is on IB so there are not a lot of AP classes and no math higher than calculus. The kids are forced to go to MC or not take higher level classes. They don't have basics like AP Bio, other sciences and math's. Not all kids want IB.

Einstein has a pitt orchestra and that would be great to redo it and give them more space.

I would be hesitant to get rid of the IB program if it's way better performing than Kennedy's, and if a majority of students/families enjoyed it. But I understand your POV.

There is no space for a performing arts magnet at Einstein.

FWIW, In 2019, jack Smith suggested a whole-school arts magnet program for Woodward in conjunction with Strathmore Center. elk about having the best auditorium in the county.

It certainly can support an addition. They just decided not to build it.

That is not true.

That was 5 years ago. They’re not going forward with it. Aren’t they putting CAP at Woodward?

Do you know something the rest of us don't? The original conceptual designs of Woodward included additional practice spaces for instrumental music, dance, and vocal performance. None of that is in the current building design.

No. Please stop spreading misinformation. They have yet to determine which special programs will be housed at Woodward.
