My DD is quite-ish, loves math and science. Not sporty at all. I know many of the all girls schools have strong athletics and am fine with that but am looking for an environment where a girl with her personality could still find her crew of nerdy/awkwardish girls and has math, science extracurricular activities or clubs. FWIW, we are Catholic. |
Probably NCS (my daughter is there). However they just offer classes while Holton and Stone Ridge both have STEM internship/research programs. NCS likes to say they're great in STEM but there's actually nothing to their STEM program. |
Maybe holy child. |
Funny 😆 |
That's good |
Check out Madeira if it's convenient, seems to attract nerdy, quirky girls but don't if it's strong in STEM. |
My niece is at Visi and she fits this prototype. I asked her and she said they have Mathletes, BEDA (Building Engineering, Design and Architecture Club), Aerospace Engineering Club, Coding Club & Pre-Med Club. I know independently that the school also has a new STEM lab and does a science fair. She says there are all types of girls there, from very strong athletes to nerdy/brainy types so you can find your tribe. FWIW she's at the end of her freshman year.
Also if you are not wedded to private maybe look at some of the specialized, magnet programs. |
Madeira and NCS |
Stone Ridge. But they all are competitive so you need to apply to few. |
Your kid would find their niche at any of them, but look particularly at Madeira or NCS. |
Agree. My nerdy, quirky STEM girl loves Madeira. Great math and science offerings and a brand new STEM building. |
NCS had math team (mediocre), science olympiad, and robotics a few years ago -- don't know if that is still true. There was a decent cohort of nerdy/anime kids, nerdy/debate team kids, but honestly most of the girls there arent presenting nerdy. |
I would stop using the term nerdy first of all. I think many of the schools have girls and a community that appreciate academic focused girls. I would say Madeira, NCS, Holton, has more of a variety of girls so you should be able to find your group at one of those if had to choose and celebrate academics etc.. For coed I would say Sidwell, GDS, and Maret add to the mix. |
Our nerd has embraced and has been embraced by Madeira. She has come to her own at this school. |
AHC!
There is a place for everyone and they have a very strong STEM/Engineering program. They actually have a scholarship cohort for this: https://www.academyoftheholycross.org/academics/academic-overview My DD toured Visi, Stone Ridge, AHC and SJC and for the all-girls schools, AHC rose to the top. I encourage you to take a look. |
