Men B vaccine before college?

Anonymous
Why isn't it mandatory? It sounds like it's mixed opinions on safety and efficacy. Not the required meningitis one, this is the new one that came out in 2015. It said it's extremely rare and has extreme side effects.

Sorry OP clarifying not extreme side effects but along the lines of the Covid vaccine. Not like like the other meningitis shot and requires two of them.

OP my HS teens have just been given this. We live in Los Angeles and there's been an alarming increase in young people dying of it. My DH also has a colleague whose 21 yr old died within days of getting it.

Do you mean the meningitis b shot or the regular one? The one I'm referring to is Bexsero

Then why it is optional and the other meningitis shot is required?

It is required in the UK, DC got the vaccine before going to college there. No side effects

It didn't used to be much of a problem in the US then in 2013ish, there was an outbreak at Princeton and they had to get the vaccine shipped in from Europe in an emergency basis. Since then a couple of vaccines have been approved.

The meningitis C had been approved long before.

This was one vaccine I didn't second guess because the disease can kill in a day or so.

The meningitis C vaccine was on the childhood vaccine schedule for years. The meningitis B one was not, leading the a mad scramble when the Princeton crisis occured. My older kid did not get the meningitis B shot because it wasn't on the schedule when he was 16. He had to play catch up and get it at the pharmacy later on. The younger one got it at the pediatrician because it had been added to the schedule and was covered by insurance by the time he was 16.

If your kid is in a dorm sharing drinks and kissing people, it's wise to get it. It's not like a covid shot where you'll probably survive just fine without a booster. If you manage to survive meningitis, you might lose limbs.

The Men B shot is not required in the UK. It's the other meningitis shot that is.

Yes. All my kids got it before going to college. I guess I don’t understand why anyone would consider not getting it. Rare- sure. Deadly? Yes.
