Sociology major

Who majors in sociology and why does it get kind of a bad rap? They do worse than history and political science majors on the LSAT and GRE for example. Does it just a lot of generalists who need a major of some sort?

It's good preparation for a full-time position lobbying the government to cancel your student loan debt that you'll never be able to pay off.

First that’s not true, second you’re stupid. Lobbyists are not sociology majors, and they are often lawyers.

Lawyers can definitely be sociology majors

Sociology is a highly quantitative field and students can definitely get good data science jobs. I work for a social science research firm and we have quite a few sociologists on staff with statistical and programming skills.

The bad rap comes from it widely being considered an "easy" major. I think they do worse comparatively not because of the courses themselves but because of the reputation; it likely draws more heavily from a less academically strong population.

Reputation aside, I agree that sociology is a highly quantitative field and will add that you can get a great education and preparation through the major.

Has served me very well for a career in social and human services policy.

I’m sure the sociologists have a category for people like OP, who spend their free time anonymously belittling entire categories of young people, simply to make themselves feel superior.

We need more Sociology majors to deal with bozos like OP.

I wish I had done my research about this when I was in college a long time ago! I loved sociology 101 and took about 3 electives in it afterwards; really liked the courses.
