Second year transfer from UMD to UVA for Biology Major

DS got accepted in the UVA transfer and wishes to apply for medical schools later in the process.
Need help to decide if he should stay in UMD or move to UVA.
Looking for more information on premed opportunities in research/clinical research at UVA and the attached hospital. How hard it is to keep the grades up in UVA.
And if there is a real repute difference between to two to make a difference in Med school acceptance.
He volunteers at local Fairfax hospitals and has a couple of research opportunities in UMD BC for which he has to commute.
The cost difference is 10k per year with UVA being cheaper for us.

Don't underestimate social happiness. Does he have friends at UMD? It can be hard to come in as a transfer and find your people. Not having a network can also make it harder to find study groups, which are important for grades in classes like orgo and biochem.

I know a pre med transfer from NVCC to UVA and while it took them a little longer to make a bigger group of friends but he is active in several clubs and is an emt all of which made him plenty of friends. He couldn’t be happier and is well on his way to med school; doing great.

Medical school admissions is pretty much high GPA and MCAT.

Look into whether he would be considered out of state for med schools in Virginia if he lives in Maryland.
It is unlikely but worth looking into

UVA is ticked off at a higher tier than UMD, per med school admissions committees. UVA is "Tier 2" below Ivy/+ schools and Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore. UMD is the tier below. Undergrad is a small but meaningful factor in med admissions. They need to study hard and get highest grades possible once they transfer.

+1. This. But also go post on CollegeConfidential and Reddit on this. You will get better answers. Remember also thst UVA has the med school and hospital right there on campus = more opportunities for PA, internships, research.

Is this speculation or knowledge? If it knowledge, it is likely just from one institution, right?

My DD is hoping to go to UVA for bio but doesn’t have a desire for med school. Why does he/she want to leave UMD? What was the intent of applying to transfer?

Pure curiosity on my part. How do you know that? Is there an official list, or is that guess based on some undergrad ranking like usnews?
I have no dog in this fight, as my kid is not pre-med.

That's easy to answer. If biology, science med schooL UVA with its own resident hospital, is the clear answer. (No. 1 in hospital in virginia). I go to UVA medical/hospital for most of my medical needs. I have met up with 100s of UVA kids acting as patients' assistant, scribe, stock planner, etc. That's how it all starts: at a teaching hospital

Odd that he did not research this before deciding to apply for a transfer…
