Background check purgatory

Anonymous
I’ve accepted a new job, given notice at my current job, and now my start date has been pushed back because my background check is hung up on some county criminal check for a location I’ve never set foot in or near in my life, and they say it won’t be resolved until next week. I’m ok with a little extra time in between jobs, but I can’t help worrying that something’s not right here. Has anyone had weird background check issues that took extra long to resolve? I’ve had multiple checks over the years and never encountered this.

Is that the County where the job is located? Because that seems strange otherwise.

No, it’s just some random county that somehow came up connected to my SSN. It’s very strange.

Possibly identity theft or someone input another SSN incorrectly.

I had a background check tied up for 6 weeks because the county had experienced a security breach and records were under temporary lockdown.

I started the new job with the understanding my offer/position was contingent on the last county coming back clear.

My background check was held up for weeks because it somehow "fell through the cracks." I was asked to take on some new things at the job as I leaving, so I felt I had to give notice. Luckily, we were a 2-income family, so the 2 months without a paycheck did not hurt us, but it was a bit nerve-racking.

Request your Lexis report (free), that's where a lot of mystery addresses come from:
https://consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com/consumer

Won't help you now, but you should dispute the inaccurate info.

Thanks for that. Would LexisNexis report be different from what’s on my credit report?

Lots of overlap, but Lexis usually has way more stuff (including more addresses plus things like email addresses you've supposedly used). Lots of companies pull it.
