I don't feel well but productivity culture is making me feel guilty for taking afternoon off

Anonymous
Would I be awful to cancel my afternoon meetings to nap?
Long story short is I injured my back and was up in excruciating pain from 3am and can barely keep my eyes open. I can muddle through the morning, but I am not sure I can pull a full day. I work remotely and DH can take the kids to their activities. But yet I feel like a "slacker" for rescheduling meetings.

You don’t need our permission. Just take the afternoon off.

Cal Newport: "Slow Productivity, The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout."
New book, just saw review in wsj. Would recommend for you. I am buying it as well. Be well.

“Productivity culture” can’t make you feel guilty. Only you can do that to yourself. Nobody cares if you reschedule meetings. They’ll likely be glad for it.

please take care of yourself. If you are hyper-productive most of the time, it's important that you listen to the story your body is trying to tell you.

How important is the meeting? Something like advil and heating pad enough to power through the back pain?

Okay this is new. “Productivity” culture?? I think that’s just called being human. Most of us have things we need to do every day.

What's new is people never calling out sick due to the advent of remote work and powering through even when their bodies are crying out for rest.

Everyone is dispensable. Take care of Yourself!

Productivity culture is not a thing.

If you need a sick day, then call one in.

It really depends on how upset your clients/colleagues would be if you cancel your afternoon meetings. That is completely job dependent and none of us know what the fall out for you would be and whether it would be worth it.

DP. People call out sick all the time at my fully remote workplace. No big deal. Is “productivity culture” something that GenZ made up to whine about on TikTok?

Don’t mess with back pain. I still have some sciatica issues and gets aggravated by additional sitting, stress, etc and takes me longer to recover. Please make time for PT if you need too.

Np it is getting tiresome these generational put downs. You know very well that people have been expected to put work over family for years. At least in the past generations the workers on some companies were rewarded with their sacriface. Now there is zero loyalty.

Ask yourself this on your deathbed are you going to regret missing work or loved ones?

Btw I am gen x
