Things that help with morning sickness

Anonymous
I am about seven weeks pregnant with my third and am already quite ill. Already started unisom + b6, which my OB recommended several years ago when I was very nauseous with my second. I take the combo before bed and am super sick again by lunchtime. Any tips? Unisom + b6 didn’t quite do the trick during my last pregnancy either.

I found the following helpful:

- Eating something plain in bed before I sat up and then at least every hour (rice cake, crackers)
- Sour candy (e.g., Preggie pops)
- No coffee or tea (tea triggered my symptoms the worst)

Ugh sorry you’re dealing with this. Just had my 3rd with hypermensis again - awful throughout and zofran barely worked - that may be your best next option…

SeaBands - I wore them all day

Being able to control the temperature in my office helped a lot - sometimes I needed the AC up, sometimes down. Ginger chews. Small bites to eat throughout the day - a few crackers at a time, etc.

Hard/sour candies always took the edge off for me— enough to function, at least. Preggie Pop Drops, ginger chews/hard candies, Sour Patch Kids, and these lemon candies I’ve only ever seen at Cracker Barrel.

Sea Bands are worth a try, but they didn’t help me most of the time.

Pink Stork morning wellness tea.

I just ended up on diclegis and zofran. Was not functional at all even after those meds.

My sickness disappeared when I increased protein. I ate chicken breast and cottage cheese to get to 70-80 grams a day.

I found something called the Blue Ribbon Baby diet and it worked well.

Get a prescription. Bonjesta has the same ingredients as unisom and b6 but is formulated differently and worked better for me. If you are really nauseous, then the home remedies don’t work in my experience at least.

I ate oatmeal first thing in the morning. Used those packs you just add water to and microwave. Wasn't a huge portion but it usually helped the nausea quite a bit.

Sounds like you aren’t taking enough Diclegis (the Unisom B6 combo). When I took it I could never get away with only one dose. I had to take one in the morning and one at night to control the nausea. The dosage also matters. What dosage is your OB recommending? I tried all homeopathic remedies and nothing touched it. The next step is Zofran, which I avoided because of the tiny risk of heart defects. I’d try Diclegis at a correct dose first.

For me it was smells. I had to sleep with open windows and seek fresh air whenever possible. I used scent free products.

Also staying cool to cold helped me - had a desk fan, chewed on crushed ice, drank cold drinks.

Pay attention to your aversions and even more attention to your cravings - there’s definitely something there! If a particular food or drink seems remotely appealing, try it!

I had great luck with potatoes of any type - mashed, baked and plain, potato pancakes, hash browns, fries.

Mom of 3 - morning to day long nausea and queasiness throughout all pregnancies. Felt better ea time at month 4

The vitamin water flavored like lemonade helped me - the sourness and the B vitamins together, I assume.

I found taking the b6 in smaller doses throughout the day helped a bit. So take the unisom at night and small dose of b6. Then another b6 in the morning.

I also found real ginger helped. I liked a ginger ale that was made from real ginger (not the Schweppes kind) worked. I'd put it on ice and take small sips.
