FCCPS College Placement

Anonymous
We have two kids soon to be going into middle school and high school. I am wondering how FCC does in regards to college placement when compared to FCPS and APS? Does the IB diploma help?

You can’t possibly compare FCCPS with FCPS or APS. It’s apples to oranges. FCCPS has one small high school.

Some will tell you the IB diploma helps with certain colleges. None of us know for sure. They should take the most rigorous course load where they can still be successful. That’s most important for the most competitive schools and even then, it’s basically a lottery.

That’s not an easy comparison, re college acceptances. Just comparing passing rates is already difficult due to how different schools implement the advanced college level classes. The U.S. News and Workd Report’s annual list of top Virginia schools (which publishes the AP and IB passing rate data) is helpful but even that list has its limitations. At W-L HS in Arlington for example, there’s an IB magnet program, but because the majority of students there take AP classes, only those AP scores are published for the U.S. News comparison.

Your best bet is to contact the guidance offices of the schools for any publically available college placement data. Alternatively, Arlington Magazine, publishes an annual college acceptance list for students from the public schools in Falls Church, Arlington, and McLean

They do fine. MHS is a well-regarded high school from an area known to produce successful students. Just like APC and FCPS.

This is not a comprehensive map with everyone's final choice, but this project gives a good picture of where kids go, year by year. Make sure to zoom out to see acceptances beyond North America.

Is there a list of where students attend college somewhere?

They used to post a map with college plans in the hallway of the old school. We would look at it while waiting for dance recitals. It always seemed so unimpressive- lots of no name, private schools. I guess folks there had money so they didn’t send their kids to equal or better publics.
