Strict new EPA rules would force coal-fired power plants to capture emissions or shut down

New limits on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-fired electric plants are the Biden administration’s most ambitious effort yet to roll back planet-warming pollution from the power sector.

The rule was among four measures targeting coal and natural gas plants that the EPA said would provide “regulatory certainty” to the power industry and encourage them to make investments to transition “to a clean energy economy.” The measures include requirements to reduce toxic wastewater pollutants from coal-fired plants and to safely manage coal ash in unlined storage ponds.

Jim Matheson, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, called the EPA rule “unlawful, unrealistic and unachievable,” adding that it faced a certain court challenge. The rule disregards the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision that limited the agency’s ability to regulate carbon pollution under the Clean Air Act, Matheson said.

Oh hey that’s great and all, but our wise Supreme Court will soon strike down Chevron doctrine and with it any power for agencies to enact sensible regulations like this, so yeah, anyway.

Obama EPA passed its own rules, and these were thrown out as beyond the scope of the Clean Air Act. The plan was to implement these and it would take years for the Supreme Court to throw out the rules, and by then it would be too late to shift course. The Supreme Court issued its first ever injunction of a regulation.

Looks like they are trying again.

Congress has never passed a law that power industry must transition to a clean energy economy.

Full speed ahead to an all electric world without the generating capacity of grid to handle it.

Obama had a truly brilliant idea, and he rolled it out even back on his campaign trail:

- he would not try to ban coal fired power plants since that would never work.

Instead, he announced he would simply raise the taxes on these plants so high that they would be impossible to operate, without banning them.

Pretty certain this is yet ANOTHER move that will be overturned. Joe Biden seems to think he is a dictator and can write laws unilaterally.

Cannot wait for this administration to be gone.

I love how this administration can one minute announce this, and another announce a need to increase military production and not see the connection.

Neither is a terrible idea individually, but it shows there is no coherent plan.

Full speed ahead to a greenhouse dystopia. It's unreasonable for any world leader to lift a finger otherwise.

If you want to talk about incoherent, your post is a great place to start.

We are racing toward ecological disaster. I’m glad they’re trying something instead of the GOP’s plan to destroy the planet to start the rapture plan.

I think he's trying to take a page out of Trump's "How to Lead" book.
