Buy Nothing Vent

I’m cleaning out my dad’s apartment. A person claimed a queen bed frame + mattress, 2 tall Billy bookshelves, a Kallax, tv stand, tall plants and a few lamps.

She showed up in a Prius. Did she think they were dollhouse miniatures?

She needs a friend and a U-Haul pickup. Hopefully she can arrange.

Um. OK.
So, what happened? Did she leave with half the load? Plan to return with a truck? Waiting for a friend w/ a truck to meet her at your house?

I advised her that she would need a friend and a truck or to hire someone. It’s Sunday. If she doesn’t pick it up by Friday, I’ll repost for someone else next weekend.

I recently cleaned out my aunt’s house and tried giving away things on Buy Nothing and Freecycle. The headaches they created weren’t worth it. In the end, I scheduled Salvation Army for furniture pickup. What they wouldn’t take, we put in the trash.

I once advertised for sale on Craigslist a heavy leather armchair. It was on behalf of my dad, who lived in an apartment. The guy who showed up to buy it was an overweight 60+ y.o. and, more importantly, had an artificial leg that he did not look to steady using. He looked at me (a not-particularly-strong middle-aged woman, my 90 y.o. dad, and my 12 y.o. daughter and asked who could help him carry it to his SUV. He literally had not thought ahead or inquired as to who would be available to help him carry it to his car.

I once advertised an armoire. I made it clear that it was big and heavy. A woman showed up, by herself, in heels, with a small sedan.

I really wonder what these people are thinking

So did she fit the armoire in the car?

They aren't.

We are moving (not far, FFX to Vienna) and so I've been listing a lot of stuff on FB Buy Nothing. I'd say about 20% of the time people I've chosen for an item have either never responded or they do DM me but then never show up. I guess it is to be expected.

I think people get so excited about something on Buy Nothing - and feel like they have to act quickly to claim it - that they don’t think through logistics.

And I think sometimes they do recognize they don’t have the strength to move it / a proper vehicle, but they hope that the person giving the item is so motivated to have it gone that they’ll help move it / use their own vehicle. Very obnoxious behavior and I’m sorry she did that!

Was she making multiple trips? The ikea crap breaks down but the mattress was she going to drive down the road with it on top or her Prius? Prius people are nuts 99.999999% of the time in my experience.

I suggest when people contact you and say they are coming to get the items ask how they plan to transport and tell them they need to bring help to load. That might help, who knows.

I recently cleaned out a family member's home. Since she lived on a well traveled street, we dragged furniture to the curb and attached a FREE sign. Obviously, we could only do this on a sunny day, but this method worked.

LMAO sorry that's hilarious!
