Summer governor’s schools or other amazing programs for high schoolers

Anonymous
I’m trying to learn more about what summer options exist here in Virginia for high schoolers. I have a rising 9th grader so this would be for next summer.

I’ve heard about the VA governor’s summer school but that appears to be for rising 11 and 12 graders.

Is that correct? Are there other programs, and how would we learn about them? Is there anything for younger teens (rising 10th)?

For example, another classmate participated in a Va government page program, where she lived in Richmond for a few weeks this year (Jan-Feb in 8th grade). How do you even find out about those programs?
My dd is interested in science and maybe music (not the page program).

OP again—it would to see a list of summer program options for high schoolers. Does anyone know of resource lists? FCCPS here but maybe other school districts have these?

Maybe ask your child's high school or middle school?

My daughter did the program below which was great and then there was an option to spend a week at the Nasa Langley Research Center in Hampton Roads. It was a great experience.

She also did Governor's School which was amazing. Highly recommend. Also I recommend applying for the summer between sophomore and junior year. Harder to get in but it's good practice for when you put in your "serious" application for the summer before senior year.

I’m sure the summer programs for a freshman in high school is top of mind for high school college counselors managing about 1000 students. All they really know is the governor school as part of the Virginia department of education, they might have flyers from other schools posted up, but really don’t expect much, this is not their job.

A lot of colleges have programs for high school students. There is also the Johns Hopkins program for gifted and talented.
