DH’s big gut is like a pregnant belly

Anonymous
Husband is 46. It seems like the strangest thing in that his belly isn’t squishy but hard. It’s like a big round basketball under his shirts. Without his shirt it’s like a perfect circle right in the middle of him.
He’s not at all fat overall…and even his belly isn’t squishy fat but hard. Like a pregnant belly. His pant size hasn’t even changed since they sit lower and his belly is higher.

Like when you hug him, it’s like a pregnant woman…his belly doesn’t give at all, it sticks out.

This just seems unusual to me but maybe not?

My dad’s belly was like that. It didn’t jiggle, it was firm like a pregnant belly. I have two uncles whose bellies seem similar. My husband, on the other hand, is much thinner than all 3 of my relatives but the fat around his middle is softer, like what you think of as excess fat.

It’s probably because the fat is visceral not subcutaneous, so it is around the organs behind the abdominal wall ra th er than just below the skin. This is the dangerous, unhealthy type is fat.

Beer belly. It’s a heart attack waiting to happen.

Is this just a saying? He doesn’t drink except wine socially.

Presumably it’s visceral fat. Sadly, I gain all my weight in my stomach and I think I had this as well to some extent even though I was just slightly overweight in terms of BMI. I’ve lost 20 lbs and stomach is better although I’d like to do more. Fat seems squishier as well which is good.

Exercise alone can reduce visceral fat even w/o actual weight loss but of course losing weight is also probably a good idea.

Could also be massive bloating. Lifelong digestive issues.

Yeah, doesn’t have to be beer csn just be fat. Of course if he eats well and exercises already get him checked to make sure nothing else is going on but if he’s sort of a standard American diet type of guy it sounds like visceral fat.

Visceral fat fortunately is easier to lose than subcutaneous fat.

My DH is like this. Some of it is genetics.. he just carries fat around his middle. He is thinnish and toned everywhere else. Actually, I'm kind of the same, as are our kids. They are stick thin, but still have a little pooch.

He has a weak core muscle; does a lot of walking, but not weight lifting or core exercises. Not surprisingly, he has back problems.

He's managed to lose like 35lbs, and it's made some difference, including when I hug him. I am petite (DH is tall), and when I used to hug him, his belly would push my upper body out, and it was awkward and uncomfortable. I made a comment about, and that's when he started to walk more

He had gone to see a PT about his back problems (and other things), and they said he had a weak core.

Your husband needs to do cardio and strength training. Don't let it go on too long. My DH was in his 50s when he started his exercise regime, and it was harder for him to lose the weight.

That is literally the worst place to hold weight. My DH has a belly but it’s not hard. And when he started lifting heavy weights it has shrunk a ton.

Men need to lift weight (women too) and keep a strong core. Otherwise they are not going to age well.

He seriously needs to lose most of it, OP, otherwise your family is in for a world of pain - him with a heart attack, atherosclerosis, dementia, COPD, and you stuck with the caregiving.

Has he seen a doctor, just to be sure there isn't anything else going on? Sounds more distended than just fat.

Does he have issues with gas, boating, abdominal pain, or constipation?

I would first have a good physical assessment to rule out any health related issues.
