I got a puppy 3 months ago and I’m just not bonding with this dog. The puppy is super cute and has no behavioral issues. I’m just not giving the dog the attention and affection he deserves. I would never bring a dog to the shelter and I am not able to give the dog back to the breeder. What’s the most responsible way to rehome the dog? I have no issue keeping and caring for the dog until a family is found. |
Contact the breeder to see if she has a taker in your area. Usually the agreement specifies that.
Do not randomly rehome the pet yourself. |
Return it to a breeder, a friend or shelter. |
Pics? |
I've been in animal rescue for over 10 years. The most responsible thing is to surrender the dog to a dog rescue. They will screen potential applicants better than a shelter will. Screening usually includes checking applicants' vet records, conducting home checks to ensure the home environment is suitable, lengthy application forms, and interviewing applicants to ensure the dog will be a good fit. What type of dog is your puppy? |
Why won’t the breeder take it back? They aren’t reputable? Maybe surrender it to awla and be the foster until someone wants to adopt it? |
Usually breeder contracts specify what they want you to do in case you cannot keep the animal. Ours did.
If that's impossible, then take it to a rescue or shelter. The ones in the DC area are pretty good with puppies, because adopters can be easily found for that age group. Just google one near you. For example, Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation in NoVa. |
Havanese |
I'll take it. We have a havanese and love her dearly. |
What breed? I’m looking to adopt a brother for my dog |
The breeder moved out of the country and is no longer breeding dogs. Apparently this dog was part of their last litter. My contract specifies they must to be asked first if the dog needs to be rehomed. They are not taking the dog back. |
Just saw your post about your dogs breed. Havanese is one of the breeds on my short list |
I will gladly take the dog if it's a havanese. It sounds a bit odd that the breeder moved out of the country that quickly and the dog is only 3 months when they come home at 12 weeks but we'll take it as we have a havanese and would like another. How do we contact you? |
Are you local? I’d be interested in meeting |
The breeder is in her 60s and is originally from Puerto Rico. I wasn’t aware she was going to move and stop breeding. Would you be willing to work with a rescue to vet you? |
