5 days in August—help me brainstorm

Anonymous
Help me brainstorm ideas of where my family of 4 can go for about 5 days in mid August. Kids are 5 and under. Direct flights from DC (but we don’t want to break the banks on flights) or under 6 hour drive. We want to go north, i.e. somewhere cooler than DC. Looking for something other than a city or the beach. Kids are willing to hike some but would not want to hike everyday. Happy to throw out more parameters!

OP here. For Burlington area or Maine, can anyone recommend particular small towns or even resorts? Anyone stated at Okemo or Stowe resorts during the summer?

Yes to VT and Maine (or upstate nY or Nh) but flights might not be as cheap as people hope.

Saratoga springs is a 6.5 hour drive.

Stowe is great. And there is Ben and Jerry’s in Waterbury and echo in Burlington

Not sure okemo has as much to do.

Saratoga Springs was not on my radar, thank you!

We stayed at the Lodge at Spruce Peak in Stowe last summer and it was great. They have a heated pool with gorgeous views, there are things to do at/around the resort. Bonus, there is a spa at the hotel if you want to spend some time pampering yourself.

We enjoyed a weekend at Smugglers Notch

What about W.VA? So easy and lots to do with the weather and no beach meeting your needs. There are some resorts but you can also get great air bnbs and explore caves, hike, fly fish, etc.
