Role changing

I was hired into a government role which was a big promotion. Shortly after my start, my boss asked me to take on a secondary role leading a program until we hired someone in 6 months.

Several years later, this trend has continued where I have to play hot potato juggling new priorities/programs that are outside the scope and lower level than the position I was hired into. Usually the reason this happens is because we’re severely understaffed, underfunded, and have turnover of a of a few employees every year.

How do I handle this other than finding a new job?

Suck it up and deal with it.

I found a new job. Other people were surprised I did not suck it up. By finding a new job and developing the skills I wanted to develop, I was able to go back for a role that actually was what I wanted.
